Minimum Education

Specific Requirements and Preferences
Masters degree in Nursing with National Board certification in one of four APRN roles. Continuing education credits necessary to maintain national board certification, and state licensure.

Minimum Work Experience

3 years

At least 3 years of related experience in pediatrics.

Required Skills/Knowledge

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Basic computer knowledge. 

Required Licenses and Certifications

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) 

Licensure & Certification: APRN licensure in District of Columbia, and/or Maryland, and/or Virginia. CPR certified. PALS, NRP, ACLS certified based on practice area recommendations. Eligible for Medical Staff credentialing. Pharmaceutical licensure as applicable. 

Functional Accountabilities

Professional Practice/Research
  1. Participate in Shared Leadership.
  2. Contribute to the MAGNET Journey of Children's National.
  3. Ensure that advanced nursing practice is based on evidence of best practice through the use of scientific and theoretical foundation for practice and on-going education and research on evidence-based practice.
  4. Provide nursing leadership in advancing evidence-based nursing practice.
  5. Accountable for participating in Division's Performance Improvement process (division or department level) to advance the efficient, appropriate and effective delivery of care.
  6. Participate in community activities.
Clinical Practice
  1. Effectively identify, evaluate, and address disease prevention and health promotion issues of the population in practice while administering quality patient care.
  2. Work in an independent and interdependent relationship with members of the medical staff, allowing for consultation, collaboration, or referral.
  3. Responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic, and long-term healthcare issues by area of practice.
  4. Educate patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues, and use of prescribed medical treatments and/or medications.
  5. Maintain legible, accurate, and confidential medical records.
  6. Document all medical evaluations, diagnosis, procedures, treatment, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations consistent with federal and state regulatory standards.
  7. Analyze new knowledge gained from conferences, workshops, professional literature, or training, and assimilate this new knowledge into clinical practice; inform and educate others regarding new learned knowledge from conferences and educational activities especially evidence-based best practices.
  8. Practice within the Scope of Practice and Delineation of Privilege Credentialing Documents for role and Division.
  9. Maintain clinical competency related to clinical area for privileged procedures.
  10. Prescribe legend drugs according to Children's National guidelines.
  11. Participate in multidisciplinary patient care, discharge planning, and resource case management.
  12. Demonstrate practice consistent with professional standards of care.
  13. Plan, manage, and evaluate orientation process for new hires at department level.
  14. Direct the clinical work of APRN students and new hires through precepting and evaluation of orientation process.
  1. Model consultation skills as a professional member of the interdisciplinary team.
  2. Demonstrate effective conflict management skills.
  3. Collaborate with nursing and other health care professionals in the planning and implementation of system change.
  4. Provide a point of contact for patients and families pre, post and throughout hospitalization.
  5. Exhibit service excellence in all areas of practice.
  6. In collaboration with the patient care team assess learning needs of patients, families, and staff, and provide education as necessary, including specialty specific education.

  1. Promote role of APRN to the public and other health care professionals.

  3. Maintain active membership in professional organizations.
  4. Demonstrate practice consistent with legal standards in compliance with applicable state and federal regulations.

  9. Participate in and/or lead departmental and organizational initiatives to represent advanced practice and leverage the role of the APRN.
  10. Direct PI project specific to APRN outcome measurement at the department level.
  11. Participate in and lead, as time allows, the research process to improve patient care outcomes.
  12. Provide leadership in promoting patient safety initiatives in clinical setting.
  13. Demonstrate leadership in facilitating best practice for population served.

Internship Program

The internship program provides the novice nurse with the knowledge base and skill set needed to transition to competence in clinical nursing practice. While providing the needed skills to meet the organization goals and mission, the program provides nurses with the leadership skills to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The program bridges the gap between undergraduate education and real-life professional nursing practice, delivering state-of-the art pediatric care.

The program is offered to new graduate nurses from an accredited nursing program with a passion for children. All new graduates, with less than one-year acute care experience, are eligible to participate in the program after obtaining licensure.
