Job Description

Overview

The major responsibilities are to lead the development and implementation of community-focused food access and food insecurity strategies and manage interventions to address these critical areas of health promotion and disease prevention. Strategies and interventions will focus on improving food access for Lurie Childrens Hospital patients and families and for residents in Chicago communities. Housed within Lurie Childrens Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC), this position is responsible for a broad range of programs and partnerships focused on all aspects of the food system. Initial aspects of this work will also include the development and management of strategies focused on Chicagos west side, in conjunction with West Side United a collaboration of hospitals and community-based organizations focused on reducing the life expectancy gap on the west side. Goals and objectives for improving food access will be achieved through collaboration with Lurie Children's Hospital clinical divisions and programs focused on food insecurity, with West Side United staff and partners, and with CLOCC community partners focused on improving food access. In managing these programs and strategies, the Program Manager will track progress on deliverables and financial expenditures related to these projects, oversee the work of staff, volunteers, and temporary student assistants, represent Lurie Childrens, CLOCC, and West Side United to community partners and other external organizations, and assist with the development of funding proposals and stewardship reports.

Responsibilities

1. Lead development of CLOCC strategies related to improving healthy food access in community and institutional settings.

2. Assist Lurie Children's Hospital and community partners in developing and implementing food insecurity and food access interventions.

3. Provide management support to the West Side United Healthy Food Access Working Group and sub-committees established to oversee its work in six strategic areas: screening and referrals for food insecure patients, healthy food policy and advocacy, emergency food network and pantry support, a Produce Rx initiative, support of school-based nutrition education, and attracting new healthy food retail to the west side.

4. Represent CLOCC and West Side United Food Access work at city, regional, and national events related to food access and food insecurity, as assigned by Directors.

5. Participate in the development of grant proposals and stewardship reports to CLOCC and West Side United funders, working with OSP and Lurie Childrens Foundation staff to prepare materials, ensuring consistent and timely communications with Lurie Childrens administrative departments, etc.

6. Assume other responsibilities as assigned by CLOCC and West Side United Directors.

7. The authority to hire, separate, promote, demote, write and administer performance evaluations.

Qualifications

1. Bachelors degree in public health nutrition or related field, Masters degree preferred. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of the degree when the experience has been directly related to the duties of the job.

2. Minimum of 3 years of experience in food access, nutrition, hunger relief, or food insecurity prevention.

3. Proven ability to develop effective systems of coordination, tracking and monitoring.

4. Ability to work well in a team environment and with different personalities and educational levels.

5. Experience supervising staff of diverse skill sets and expertise, including staff who work in the field.

6. Ability to handle a variety of responsibilities simultaneously and without constant direction.

7. Strong analytical, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills required.

8. Working knowledge and skills in Microsoft computer software applications and database technologies.

9. Ability to establish priorities and react promptly to a large variety of requests and needs, sometimes in stressful situations.
