Job Summary

The Division of Pulmonary Medicine and The Center for Lung Research at CHOP are dedicated to understanding the mechanisms underlying lung diseases and developing new strategies to prevent and treat these disorders. Studies in the Young laboratory encompass a spectrum of basic and patient-oriented research in interstitial lung diseases (ILD) and rare lung diseases and lung biology. Genetic mouse models and in vitro systems are utilized to understand the cell biology and mechanisms of ILD pathogenesis. Longitudinal research cohorts of patients with rare lung diseases provide biospecimens for genetic discovery and translational studies, with a goal of applying that knowledge towards the development of therapies.

The Research Scientist I works closely with Dr. Young in developing and implementing the scientific directions of the laboratory and assisting and mentoring other staff and trainees. Experiments will utilize murine models, human samples, and in vitro cell culture systems for molecular studies.

This position requires specialized education in the biological sciences, with significant scientifically relevant experience including proficiency in relevant techniques for in vivo and/or in vitro molecular studies, as well as skills in analysis and presentation of data. Other duties include training and oversight of trainees working in the laboratory and collaboration with other internal and external scientific collaborators.

Job Responsibilities

* Conducts research of significant scientific value in the basic and/or translational science area(s) relevant to their practice specialty.
* Participates in the design, planning and conduct of one or more experiments.
* Trains technical staff, students, fellows & physicians in lab procedures.
* Monitors daily resource allocations and day-to-day lab personnel activities.
* Composes/Assists in developing publications for peer reviewed, scientific, quality and management, Journals.
* Assists with the submission of applications for grants/contracts for funding of research projects.
* Collaborates with researchers, external agencies and institutions to develop cooperative research initiatives.
* Responsible for appropriate use of research funds.
* May supervise technical staff and students.
* May participate in educational programs and teaching assignments.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Terminal degree (MD, PhD, DVM) required. Can be substituted for Masters of Science with 6-8 years of scientifically relevant experience.

Required Experience: 0-2 years of scientifically relevant post-fellowship experience.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Experience: Post-Doctoral fellowship experience.
