JOB SUMMARY

Provides assistance and support to clinical laboratory technologists and technicians. Performs pre-analytical processes. Works effectively with others to meet patient and care provider needs. Actively promotes a lean work culture by performing team member duties to encourage consistent use of lean principles and processes, including continually seeking work process improvements. Recognizes necessity of taking ownership of own motivation, morale, performance, and professional development. Strives for behavior consistent with being committed to the lab’s and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta’s mission, goals, and values.

  • 2 years of experience in hospital laboratory processing

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES*

  • Must understand basic medical terminology

  • Able to perform clerical duties, e.g., filing and receptionist activities
  • Laboratory computer skills
  • Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks in a frequently stressful environment while maintaining strong customer service standards in dealing with customers and coworkers

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*

  1. Enters orders and receives all specimens in laboratory information system.
  2. Ensures validity of requisition to meet applicable Managed Care and Medicaid guidelines.
  3. Processes specimens based on testing requirements.
  4. Processes LabCorp and Quest specimens from outpatients and draw stations.
  5. Manages workflow of specimen collection and specimen processing areas and assists in training new employees.
  6. Maintains equipment, supplies, and work area.
  7. Ensures safe environment which is functional as well as professional in appearance and safe for patients, public, and staff.
  8. Acts as resource for clinicians with test ordering management.
  9. Demonstrates familiarity with and follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures, including those pertaining to safety and compliance.
  10. Uses critical thinking principles in making decisions that lead to desired outcomes.
  11. Performs quality assurance by monitoring collection pending logs, timed and stat specimens, HRP, and laboratory information systems error log.
  12. Documents order errors and integrity of specimen issues.
  13. Actively promotes a lean culture by performing duties to promote an understanding and consistent use of lean principals and processes.
  14. Performs duties, makes decisions, takes actions, and continually strives to improve work processes using an awareness of how work performed is valued by the customer.

SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES*

Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.

 

Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
