JOB SUMMARY

This position will work under the Support Services Supervisor to provide assistance and support to clinical laboratory technologists and technicians. Duties include identification, labeling, processing and distributing laboratory samples to appropriate areas, data entry, routine instrument checks and other duties as assigned. The Specimen Processor will be responsible for preparing samples for testing in house and assist in the preparation of the specimens to be sent out to reference laboratories, answer phone calls and resolve problems with samples and perform other Customer Service related activities. The Specimen Processor must be able to work independently and effectively with others to meet the needs of the patient and care providers.  To proactively support the efforts that will ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and to promote a safe environment at Children's. Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers while demonstrating a positive and professional image at all times.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 2 years hospital experience with laboratory processing preferred.
  • Must understand basic medical terminology.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills.
  • Able to perform clerical duties (filing and receptionist activities).
  • Laboratory Computer Skills required.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the Basic Windows Skills Assessment at 80% or higher rating within 30 days of hiring.
  • Ability to perform multiple, concurrent tasks in a frequently stressful environment while maintaining strong customer service standards in dealing with customers and co-workers.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Receives and electronically records receipt of all specimens in Laboratory Information System (LIS)

Assures validity of requisition to meet applicable Managed Care and Medicaid guidelines.

Orders testing in LIS, labels and accessions specimens for laboratory testing. Enters order comments and/or special instructions in Order Entry function of LIS.

Manages workflow in the processing area of the Support Services department.

Distributes all specimens to appropriate department for laboratory testing and assists with the locating of specimens for “add-on” testing.

Identifies and prepares specimens by confirming demographic information for processing, preparation and distribution.

Participates in the orientation and training of new employees.

Must have strong customer service skills. Ability to interact effectively and communicate proficiently with hospital staff, patients, physicians, and others. A resource for clinicians for test ordering management.

Performs clerical duties including but not limited to faxing, filing, and result/report delivery via fax or mail.

Oversees specimen collection pending logs, timed and stat specimens and the LIS error log

Centrifuges specimens based on testing requirements.

Processes Newborn Metabolic Screening specimens for delivery to the Georgia Department of Health.

Assist with the processing of reference laboratory specimens for the “Draw Station” collections.

Assists supervisor for managing workflow of the specimen collection and specimen processing area.

Follows departmental and system policies and procedures.

Maintains equipment, supplies, and work area. Assist in ensuring a clean and safe environment and work area, which is functional as well as professional in appearance, safe for patient care, the public and staff.

Oversees and documents order errors and integrity of specimen issues.

Maintains current technical knowledge and skills as defined in Laboratory Competency policy. Performs annual written and observed competency testing.

Maintains compliance with standards set by the Children’s and all regulatory / accrediting agencies.

Participates in education programs in the laboratory to ensure the highest degree of competency within the established scope of patient care. Participates in laboratory and Children’s performance improvement and quality assurance programs and initiatives.

Performs other job related duties, special assignments and assist others as appropriate and assigned.
