Assists in managing the operational aspects of the department to ensure continuous, timely and quality service. Accountability for day to day patient testing activities within the laboratory defined by either single cost center and/or >10 but < 30 FTE’s and /or limited specialized training. Plans, coordinates and directs testing activities to assure sufficient quantities of supplies, reagents and qualified competent staff are available to meet the standards of care as appropriate for the age of the patients served in a cost effective manner. To proactively support the efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and to promote a safe environment at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.


  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related field or has met the minimal education and experience requirements as outlined by a nationally recognized Medical Technology certifying body
  2. Five (5) years full time experience as a medical technologist in a clinical laboratory setting
  3. Current certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent)
  4. Eligible for supervisor certification by the Georgia Department of Human Resources
  5. Demonstrated interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  6. Thorough knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices including standard precautions and hazardous chemical handling
  7. Considerable knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, terminology and regulatory agencies standards
  8. Ability to implement and refine procedures, to maintain effective reporting procedures and control workflow, to train, orient, and evaluate the job performance of various laboratory personnel, to maintain inventory control systems, and make budgetary projections, and to schedule adequate numbers of competent staff on a day to day basis


  1. Supervises the work of laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine and specialized technical procedures, including planning laboratory work, evaluating work performed and handling procedural and technical laboratory problems.
  2. Implements quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, proper function of laboratory equipment and compliance with federal regulations; prepare and maintain applicable records.
  3. Prepares administrative reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results; coordinate the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  4. Participates in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques; plan,             develop and present workshops; stay abreast of and execute latest technical and management             developments including new laboratory procedures.  
  5. Designs and implements appropriate work schedules for department employees. Plan daily work schedules to maintain an adequate personnel complement for laboratory efficiency at all times.
  6. Actively works at hiring, motivating, developing and retaining staff. Uses a variety of methods to             motivate his or her team. Takes a leadership role in the recruiting and hiring of key staff.
  7. Coaches all members of the team and clarifies performance expectations for each member.             Provides timely feedback in a positive manner that supports improvement. Annual evaluations are completed on time and professional development plans are developed and reviewed with each direct report.
  8. Monitors Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Safety and Infection Control practices to assure compliance with internal and external regulations.
  9. Communicates in a professional and courteous manner with patients, family, and other medical             personnel as necessary to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, clarify             orders and communicate status.
  10. Promotes and is a resource for problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation,             verification of specimen quality and test results.
  11. Demonstrates decision-making abilities in all aspects of performance.
