Job Description

The Sexual Health Specialist will develop, implement, and evaluate programs and services designed to address increasing sexual health education and decreasing health-related barriers to learning. The Sexual Health Specialist provides critical support and leadership in implementing the HIV/STI Prevention Initiative. The Specialist will advance Chicago Public Schools' commitment to student health and wellness, focusing on policies, education, services, and professional development.

Principal Accountabilities:

* Conduct outreach and provide expert guidance and support to schools in achieving the goals of the HIV/STI Prevention Initiative.


* Oversee OSHW partnership with CDPH MICAH Bureau, with a specific focus on the Chicago Healthy Adolescents and Teens (CHAT) Program-related initiatives and operations within District schools


* Collaborate with community partners in the development of youth mentorship and leadership opportunities in HIV/STI Prevention Initiative schools.


* Support department infrastructure on sexual health-related services, including creation of professional developments for staff and school stakeholders on utilizing youth-friendly referrals systems, sexual health service community resources, and establishing appropriate reporting systems


* Engage school leadership and designated staff in monthly meetings to assess, review, strategize and implement HIV/STI Prevention Initiative activities.


* Collaborate with relevant CPS departments and facilitate relationships to ensure internal alignment of efforts to achieve OSHW goals.


* Collect, report, and monitor data regarding internal and external partners providing sexual health education and health related services.


* Assist with development, implementation, and monitoring of policies that promote student health.


* Oversee administration of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey and School Health Profiles survey, achieve weighted data and disseminate results.


* Provide technical assistance for other state and local surveillance systems.


* Assist with the development and implementation of internal and external OSHW communications strategy in collaboration with department leadership.


* Conduct frequent research on current resources, policies, best practices, and guidance that will inform program implementation and outcomes of HIV/STI Prevention Initiative.


* Prepare outreach and educational documents, fact sheets, and other communication materials related to HIV/STI Prevention Initiatives.


* Assist with writing mid-year and annual reports for CDC grant reporting.


* Supervise and provide mentorship to interns on completing assigned tasks and activities addressing adolescent sexual health.


* Provide professional development on sexual health education, sexual health services and how to support LGBTQ students


* Other duties as assigned.



Type of Education Required:

* Bachelor's degree (B.A or B.S.) and Master's degree preferred.



Type of experience and number of years:

* Three- five years' experience in program development and implementation.


* Experience in project management concepts, practices and procedures.


* Working knowledge of sexual health education and STI/HIV prevention programs.


* Must be proficient with the use of computers and software including but not limited to Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, and Access.


* Experience with the management of federal grants and reporting.


* Experience working with/collaborating with urban public schools preferred.


* Experience working with adolescent population.

* Experience and adeptness in meeting facilitation.


* Willingness to work evenings and weekends when needed.


* Ability to work with minimum supervision.


* Capacity to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference is required.


* Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulation.


* Possess integrity and tact when dealing with confidential information and sensitive situations.


* Demonstrated skills in trend analysis to proactively identify issues and make sound recommendations.


* Bilingual skills in English/Spanish preferred.



Residency Requirement:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of his or her CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
