Chevron Energy Technology Company is accepting online applications for the position of Geological and Geophysical Functional Subject Matter Expert, located in Houston, Texas.

This role provides earth science application and data management support and is co-located with Houston based international upstream groups. The ideal candidate will have previous experience using and supporting exploration interpretation applications. The person in the position will assist in the transition from Landmark applications to a Next Gen framework. The position provides an excellent opportunity for this individual to learn up-to-date Chevron Next-Gen interpretation technology. Ongoing support will consist of providing geological and geophysical interpretation and petrotechnical data management support. The candidate will coordinate with Technical Computing central support, other co-located support, Earth Science Department, Reservoir Engineering, and Next Gen deployment team and is part of a large team providing similar support.

Some domestic and international travel may be necessary for this position.


Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Provide direct support for business unit use of Geological and Geophysical Interpretation workflows and applications.
  • Ensure that data (2D/3D seismic, well logs, etc) are loaded according to procedures and standards, including identifying, converting, and verification of projection system information. Compare incoming data to existing to avoid duplication or overwriting. Document loaded data. Analyze amplitudes on loaded data for scaling to consistent amplitudes for a project. QC of loaded and scaled seismic data and its positioning.
  • Create interpretation projects, using best data management practices - minimize duplications and document. Export and import projects/seismic/interpretations, as is or as ascii/segy files to exchange with other offices/partners/etc.
  • Manage interpretation projects, including monitoring space and data quality. Assist interpreters by providing overviews of projects and basic applications.
  • Ensure a strong service delivery focus, maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction, and high quality of service.
  • Work as part of a team to support the exploration technical software and data environment. Assist support team members and embedded business unit support to solve application and data problems.
  • Prepare written documentation and occasionally makes presentations to business units and management.
  • Interface with CVX Business Unit technical staff in various locations. Mentor national employees and develop training plans.

    Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Geophysics or Geology. Degrees in Engineering, Math, or Physics will also be considered.
  • Possess knowledge and experience with 2D and 3D earth science workflows including: 3D volume interpretation, amplitude analysis, mapping, well cross-sections, time/depth conversions, and seismic synthetic creation.
  • Knowledge of and experience providing application and data support for G&G applications: (OpenWorks/SeisWorks, Petrel, Epos, PnP, OpenSpirit, and Gocad are primary applications).
  • Experience with seismic interpretation application tools,such as the Epos data management and integration framework.
  • Strong general IT skills, e.g. Linux and scripting skills, Oracle, SQL skills, and Excel.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced working environment that has multi-groups to support. Ability to understand the relative priority of work requested to best address Chevron's interests.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent team player with the ability to work unsupervised and in a group environment.
  • Must be service and customer oriented.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master's Degree in Geophysics or Geology.

    Relocation Options:

    Relocation may be considered within Chevron parameters.
