About CHATHAM SCHOOL DISTRICT

In Southeast Alaska, The Chatham School District serves an area of approximately 43,000 square miles stretching from Angoon, on Admiralty Island in the South, to Klukwan, beyond Haines, in the North. The district is composed of four schools in separate communities. Angoon lies on Admiralty Island. Tenakee Springs is on Chichagof Island. Gustavus lies on the mainland near the entrance to Glacier Bay. The village of Klukwan lies 23 miles North of Haines. The communities are accessible by Ferry and/or -plane. The schools vary in enrollment with from a dozen in Tenakee to about 100 in Angoon. The overall operation of the Chatham District is under leadership of an elected board. The board members can be contacted by mail through the district office at Post Office Box 109, Angoon, Alaska 99820. The board believes that shared decision making at the site level can improve school performance. There is an Advisory School Board representing each site. Chatham's School Superintendent of Scott Butterfield, in conjunction with board members and all school staff, implements school policies. The Regional Board recognizes that we live in a pluralistic society which must use the diversity of culture, talent and experience to provide the highest quality of educational planning for children.
