Manager of Student Employment

The Manager of Student employment will be responsible for the management of the student employment function at Central Michigan University. The role includes hiring of all student employees, interpreting related human resources laws and regulations and oversight for posting on and off-campus job opportunities for students.

This position offers guidance to supervisors on how to deal with various student employment issues, administers and balances the College Work Study program and presents training programs and workshops for staff, faculty, students and parents. 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in human resources, business, or a related field. 
  • Three years of professional (administrative/supervisory) experience of a qualifying nature. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of employment processes and human resources laws/regulations and/or financial aid regulations. 
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise the work of others. 
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and project a positive image.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with SAP. 
  • Familiarity with College Work Study regulations.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages and organizes the efforts of the office and staff to provide comprehensive service to students and departments. 
  • Supervises the staff that work in the Student Employment office.
  • Oversees the hiring of all student employees into the payroll system (SAP) and financial systems (SAM), including wage adjustments, terminations, and account changes. 
  • Ensures university college work-study allocation is spent, balanced, and the results reported to appropriate departments.
  • Counsels students and parents in the area of financial aid and/or student employment, adjusting financial aid packages and determining eligibility.
  • Presents work opportunities for students through orientation, the internet, and bulletin boards.
  • Coordinates and oversees programs related to student employment, such as community service and off-campus job referrals.
  • Ensures appropriate human resources and financial aid policies and procedures are followed when hiring student employees.
  • Ensures compliance with laws and regulations (i.e. child labor laws, I- 9 regulations, FERPA) while maintaining knowledge of the financial aid regulations.
  • Recommends changes and/or modifications to student employment policies and programs.
  • Responsible for the classification and wage systems developed for student employees.
  • Communicates with departments and students regarding deadlines that must be met in order to receive college work study.
  • Awards college work study to summer student employees.
  • Presents training sessions as needed.
