Job Description

$2500 SIGN ON BONUS

BASIC PURPOSE:

The Acute Certified Dialysis Technician, under the supervision of the CDC Registered Nurse, provides direct care for patients receiving hemodialysis and performs clinical procedures as permitted by the individual's State specific regulations and scope of practice.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs data collection of the patient pre-dialysis treatment and reviews the patient clinical information and physician orders with the Registered Nurse.
  • Completes the clinical information on the hemodialysis treatment record appropriately.
  • Initiates and terminates the hemodialysis procedure as prescribed.
  • Obtains blood samples for laboratory analysis pre, during and post dialysis as ordered.
  • Administers medications necessary for the dialysis treatment (ie saline, heparin) as prescribed by the nephrologist and approved by specific State certification.
  • Monitors the dialysis procedure by obtaining vital signs; recognizes possible patient and machine complications and responds accordingly.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the concepts of hemodialysis.
  • Knows and performs the CDC disinfection and rinsing procedures pre and post treatment.
  • Monitors and assists in the completion of the dialysis machine pre-treatment self- test.
  • Understands the components of the portable RO system and the proper set-up and functionality.
  • Able to perform minor troubleshooting and problem solving for the dialysis machine.
  • Maintains CDC equipment to help reduce the incidence of equipment failure in order to reduce downtime and loss of productivity.
  • Maintains the work area to reduce the likelihood of safety hazards.
  • Knows the procedure and is able to accurately prepare dialysate additives to increase potassium or calcium in the dialysate as ordered and allowed per State specific regulations.
  • Utilizes dialysis standard precautions for infection control properly and observes and meets all safety standards and regulations.
  • Meets the requirements for educational in-services, meeting and competency requirements, including maintaining CPR certification.
  • Performs other functions or duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Demonstrates the ability to perform data collection of the patient pre-dialysis treatment and complete the clinical information on the hemodialysis treatment record appropriately.
  • Recognizes the importance of a safe and effective environment in which to provide care for the dialysis patient.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care.
  • Demonstrates operational knowledge of hospital and CDC policies and procedures, and equipment.
  • Demonstrates understanding of dialysis equipment and competency to perform the dialysis procedure.
  • Recognizes possible complications in the hemodialysis procedure and initiates appropriate interventions per scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates awareness of rules and regulations relating to area of responsibility.
  • Recognizes the patient's right to pain management and assists the RN in meeting the patient's needs.
  • Recognizes signs and symptoms of patient abuse and reports to Supervisor.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

  • Interacts with patient and peers to provide a pleasant working environment that promotes positive working relationships.
  • Knows when to seek assistance.
  • Resolves conflict quickly and appropriately, and/or seeks assistance from Supervisor if indicated.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and professional behavior to patients, co-workers, and other healthcare workers.
  • Consults with Supervisor and others as necessary to provide safe and effective patient care.
  • Responds appropriately to questions and concerns asked by the patient, patient's family and/or significant other within patient legal considerations.

ATTENDANCE

  • Demonstrates dependability by being at work consistently on time when scheduled.

PROFESSIONALISM:

  • Maintains professional competence by participating in continuing education programs relating to pertinent dialysis related topics or patient health care topics.
  • Serves on committees when appropriate, to represent professional issues and to facilitate planning, development, and continued growth of CDC and its Staff

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE TRAINING AND LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • BONENT or other Federal or State specific certification such as CCHT certification.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in hemodialysis required.
