Job Description

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is an 886-bed non-profit, acute, quaternary, teaching Level I Trauma Center hospital located in the heart of Los Angeles, California. The Department of Pharmacy has over approximately 400 staff members who provide comprehensive inpatient pharmacy services as well as outpatient services via 2 cancer centers and 3 outpatient pharmacies. The Department of Pharmacy is committed to the education and training of pharmacists, students/interns, residents, technicians, and other health care professionals. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) is affiliated with several Schools of Pharmacy and offers PGY1 and PGY2 residency programs. The residency and student experiential programs at CSMC continue to grow with every successive year, where nearly 100 residents have graduated from the PGY1 pharmacy residency program since 1985 and more than 200 student rotations are offered at CSMC annually. Recently, CSMC was recognized and bestowed "Site of the Year" awards by two major affiliated CA Schools of Pharmacy for providing an exceptional experiential learning environment for their students.

The intern pharmacist in our Samuel Oschin Cancer Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is responsible for the development and utilization of skills required in drug distribution and in the provision of clinical services in an institutional setting under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. The intern pharmacist is also responsible for general Pharmacy Technician responsibilities, including the preparation, distribution and control of sterile and non-sterile oral and injectable medications and participation in departmental programs. All duties are performed independently by the intern pharmacist under the supervision of a pharmacist.

* Pharmacy student enrolled at an accredited school of pharmacy in their second year of school.
* Registered as an Intern Pharmacist with the California State Board of Pharmacy
* Ability to speak read and write the English language.
* Individuals must be able to do calculations involving ratios, proportions and percentages.
* Subject to background and reference check.
* Post Hiring:

o Required to attend and pass all of the pharmacy technician training classes with a minimum score of 90% on the exam.

o In the event of a score of less than 90% on any part of the exam, a trainee will be allowed to repeat a test section one time only. Failure to pass with 90% or better on a repeat test will result in termination or transfer back to the previous position of another department.

o Acceptable completion of the on-the-job training program as evidenced by work samples and/or practical examinations.

License required:

Registered as an Intern Pharmacist with the California State Board of Pharmacy

Distinguishing Characteristics

o Intern Pharmacists must have an adequate background in Pharmacy or Pharmacy Training, as well as show a deep sense of honesty, integrity, reliability and good hygiene. Pharmacy background is necessary for the intern pharmacist to be able to interpret physicians' orders for pharmacy items and to calculate dosages, volumes, weights, etc. for extemporaneous compounding.

o Intern Pharmacists must exhibit accuracy and punctuality in all facets of their work.

Job Requirements

o Equipment. The intern pharmacist must be able to use the following equipment: calculator, computer printer, PC, medication carts, automated dispensing machines etc. Proficiency in the operation of specialized equipment is necessary for assignment to specialized areas, i.e. OR/ER, Sterile Manufacturing, outpatient pharmacies, Storeroom, etc.

o Schedule/Hours: The intern pharmacist must be able to rotate shifts, alternate weekends, and rotate throughout any areas requiring a pharmacy technician.

Skills and Special Knowledge

o Drug names (trade and generic)

o Mathematics

o Latin and chemical abbreviations

o Aseptic technique

o Regulations pertaining to the dispensing of medications

o How to determine storage conditions for pharmaceuticals

o How to determine a drug's formulary status

o Computer functions

Use of keyboard

Operation of printer including loading paper

Selection of appropriate functions in assigned work area, e.g.; running fill lists and IVPB lists, TCE reports.

BLS certification as outlined in the Pharmacist Responsibilities in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation(C.P.R.) and Code Blue Procedure: Pharmacy Policy and Procedure
