Job Description

Support Carilion's hallmarks of service excellence and quality for all job responsibilities.

Review clinical documentation and diagnostic results as appropriate to extract data and apply appropriate ICD-9-CM or ICD-10 CM and CPT-4 codes for billing, internal and external reporting, research, and regulatory compliance.   May assist with Outpatient Diagnostic Coding as needed. Consults with physicians to improve or clarify medical record documentation for complete, accurate and compliant coding. Ensures reconciliation of charge errors through consultation the Revenue Audit division of RCM for HB. When necessary, assists in design and implementation of workflow changes to reduce billing errors.  Facility ED Volume is approximately 200,000 visits per year.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education:  High School education required: college degree preferred. Medical Terminology and Physiology & Anatomy required.

Experience: Coder ED: To be considered an Coding Candidate for Hospital Billing, the applicant must have a minimum of 8 months of proven, consistent proficiency in OP Diagnostic Coding (95% accuracy).

Prior experience in ED and/or Ambulatory (Same Day) Hospital surgery preferred.

Coder –Ambulatory : Prior experience in ED and/or Ambulatory (Same Day) Hospital surgery preferred.

The successful internal candidate for Ambulatory Surgery will have a minimum of 1.5 to 2.0 years combined experience in Outpatient and ED Coding, with a consistent accuracy rating of 95% or better.

Coder PB: To be considered a PB Coding Candidate, the internal applicant must have a minimum of 8 months of proven, consistent proficiency in Professional Services Coding (96% accuracy).

The successful internal candidate will have a minimum of 1.5-2 years combined experience in Inpatient or Outpatient Radiology, ED, Orthopedic, or Specialty Coding, with a consistent accuracy rating of 96% or better.

External Candidates must have previous Professional Physician Coding experience, with prior Surgerycoding experience preferred. Basic computer skills required.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration:  RHIT, RHIA, CPC,  CCA, CCS, or CPC-H Required or RN with Coding Credentials
