Under the general supervision of the Technology Support Services Manager, the User Experience Specialist is responsible for ensuring that campus web applications are serving the needs of their audience, through periodic review, usability testing, web analytics, and user interviews.

Web Services in Information Technology is responsible for building and maintaining all campus websites and web applications for Cal State Monterey Bay. In order to improve the general experience of users, this position also writes documentation and case studies to help others use on-campus tools more efficiently.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Works closely with other members of the Web Services team, ensuring that usability problems are effectively communicated to others so they can be fixed quickly.
- Provides end-user support for some web applications in the form of phone calls, emails, or instant messages, and uses these support experiences to "close the loop" by turning them into opportunities to improve campus websites.

Project coordination:
- Acts as a liaison and interface between faculty, staff, and information systems resources and staff. Facilitates the communication, tracking, documentation and resolution of usability problems and issues.
- Assists with project management duties for new web applications or upgrades.
- Conducts projects to install or evaluate software or procedures for its use.

Information design:
- Develops content for university websites, as well as working with departments across campus to insure their information architecture and content strategies are in place.
Interface design:
- Works with Web Developer and other UX staff to create and refine user interfaces and interactions on csumb.edu and other web applications.


- Develops and/or conducts formal training programs, lab/equipment orientations and demonstrations, and self-guided tutorials on equipment, applications, databases, and related systems.
- Develops and presents short courses designed to introduce users to hardware and software supported by Support Services.
- Writes user documentation, user guides, instructor guides, training outlines and technical training.
- Develops and maintains current technical documentation and on-line help-files in Support Services.

User research:

- Conducts and analyzes qualitative and quantitative user research, such as focus groups, interviews and surveys.

Other Functions:

Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.


Knowledge of: software programs including email, word processing, spreadsheet and presentations. Knowledge and ability to implement, organize, administer, and effectively lead an internal (in-house) training program. Knowledge of training theory and practices demonstrated by an ability to develop and deliver technical training and user documentation.

Skills: Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills in working with users to interpret needs and provide appropriate solutions. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; a keen attention to detail; ability to communicate with a diverse group of functional managers and staff, technical professionals, and end users consisting of students, faculty and staff. Strong collaborative team and organizational skills required, as well as the demonstrated ability to coordinate a large-scale training program.

Ability to: to write effectively and understand technical terminology associated with an applications software system; ability to map and document workflows related to business processes; learn new technologies and business processes from both a technical and functional perspective; apply consultative skills to assess user needs and provide appropriate support; work effectively with cross-functional teams with representatives from various departments working on multiple project tasks; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships within a diverse, academic environment.


A basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.


Ability to translate complex technical and data-related topics into a clear and understandable language. Knowledge of general principles of both graphic and human interface design. Ability to understand, apply, analyze, evaluate and create research specific to the usability of a web interface. Ability to write user documentation, user guides, instructor guides, training outlines and technical training. Experience using usability, information architecture, and content revisioning software. Ability to work within a team or independently, demonstrating strong personal initiative and ability to work reliably with minimal supervision and to communicate and collaborate with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and members of the community in one-to-one or group settings. Experience using both Google mail and calendaring programs. Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge and abilities identified above.


Two (2) years of related experience. Degree in psychology, cinematic arts or writing. Technical fluency in usability testing, user experience evaluations, and user interface design. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB's Vision.


The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position within the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.


Experience in implementing degree audit systems. Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft or equivalent student information system and Google mail and calendaring programs. Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB's Vision.

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
