ECST LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

Equipment Technician II, Electro-Mechanical

College of Engineering, Computer Science & Technology

Salary Range: $3,748 - $6,582/Monthly

Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; temporary, expires on or before one year from start date; may be extended; may become permanent; non-exempt classification.

Essential Functions: Under general supervision, the incumbent performs skilled repair, maintenance and design or modification of equipment at this level. Emphasis is upon the design, fabrication, and construction of unique equipment, teaching aids and technical apparatus for use in the laboratory or classroom related to instructional support. Assignments may include other duties related to instructional support. Major duties and responsibilities are: design, fabrication, modification, diagnostics, repair and testing of mechanical electrical, and electro-mechanical equipment, scientific apparatus, instrumentation and educational support equipment for all ECST departments, automotive/ transportation related projects, laboratories and areas. Assist all other technical staff, faculty and students with special projects, experiments and related work. Design fabricate and test unique teaching aids, analytical equipment and prototype apparatus for all ECST departments and laboratories. Issue, maintain, store, requisition, expedite and keep records of supplies, materials, components, replacement parts, and equipment and instrumentation. May be required to assist with hydrogen fueling operations, maintenance and research. Develop and maintain various records as required for laboratory support. Assist in the development and maintenance of laboratory security for all ECST departments, equipment and laboratories. Diagnose and repair simple laboratory computer hardware problems. Plan, organize, coordinate and assist with the installation of new specialized laboratory instructional equipment.

Required Qualifications & Experience: The incumbent must have equivalent to two years of journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation or scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned such as mechanical, electromechanical, electronics or in the specialized category including construction and fabrication and some precision work or requiring trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials. Or, equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related experience in the type of equipment to which assigned as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of required experience. Or, equivalent to two years of trade school or technical training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair for one year of the required experience. The incumbent must be skilled in the use of common hand tools, metal and wood working machinery to facilitate the fabrication, repair and maintenance of laboratory equipment, instrumentation and experimentation. The incumbent must have comprehensive knowledge of the theory, materials, tools and equipment used in the fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair and operation of mechanical, electrical, electro-mechanical equipment, scientific apparatus and instrumentation. The incumbent must possess a valid California driver license. The incumbent must also have the ability to diagnose the problems of a wide variety of equipment and effect needed repairs; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those correspondence to include email as required; establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with those contacted in the course of the work; design, develops, and fabricates teaching aids models and prototype apparatus to support the educational curriculum; and have a demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered

Special Desired Qualifications: Experience in technical functions in an academic setting. Knowledge in CNC machine operations, CNC programming, towing trailers, steel welding, aluminum welding, and waterjet operation.
