About the Department

Physical Plant Management (PPM) in the division of Administration and Finance, plays an important role in maintaining the quality of CSUN's physical environment by keeping the buildings and landscape safe, clean and aesthetically pleasing. PPM employees provide excellent customer service to the campus community in the areas of facility and engineering services, asset management, central receiving and campus store, university postal services, and reprographics/quickcopies. PPM performs maintenance work and makes major and minor repairs to campus facilities and remodels, renovates classrooms, and offices at the request of other departments.

Major Duties

Under immediate supervision, the Groundsworker performs landscape and grounds maintenance duties in accordance with university standards. The incumbent, mows and edges lawns on schedule; controls weed growth with chemicals; rakes leaves; picks up trash; plants, cultivates, fertilizes, waters and sprays ornamental plants; prepares and treats soil for planting; maintains tools, hoses, sprinklers, supplies and equipment in proper condition and repair; performs minor asphalt and concrete work; operates and performs minor maintenance on small power operated equipment; reports safety hazards, sprinkler malfunctions, property damage and any other disorders that need attention; assists in the preparation and lining of athletic fields as needed; assists as a team member on special projects and events as required; cleans and maintains eating areas and storage rooms; drives pick-up trucks and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties; may oversee the work of unskilled assistants as needed; and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.

CANDIDATE MUST POSSESS A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER'S LICENSE.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods. General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers as well as the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment. Ability and specialized skills to: recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described above; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to operate skillfully small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and follow simple oral and written instructions.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

The salary range for this classification is: $2736 - $4806 per month.

The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $2736 - $3100, dependent upon qualifications and experience.

HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; 6:00am - 2:30pm, Monday through Friday.

REG: This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
