The clinical laboratory of Student Health Services functions as a diagnostic entity for the physicians and nurse practitioners in providing health care for students.


The Clinical Lab Scientist will follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results; perform a variety of standardized clinical laboratory tests, some of which are highly or moderately waived complexity and require complex professional judgement and involve numerous steps and procedures in compliance with the university safety standards and OSHA regulations. Under the supervision of a general supervisor; the incumbent will perform chemical, microscopic, microbiological, hematological, cytological, and other laboratory diagnostic tests; collect specimens, maintain and operate instruments and equipment utilizing established procedures. The incumbent will adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance; perform proficiency testing; follow the laboratory's policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance; be able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance and be able to correct the problem (or notify the appropriate supervisor). The incumbent will keep up supplies and maintain laboratory in orderly condition; assist in training and supervising phlebomist. This will include Laboratory safety, confidentiality, as well as using the laboratory information system; set up appointments for specific lab procedures; instruct and counsel patients regarding lab procedures, including drawing blood. The incumbent will perform other duties as assigned.


Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent from an accredited institution, or equivalent post-secondary education, training and experience as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Possess and maintain a valid California Laboratory Scientist License.


Writing of lab reports, marking data sheets, completing proficiency test reports, using a computer to track progress and report results; maintaining records; documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
