ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN - The Mechanical Engineering Department within the College of Engineering at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA invites applications for full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty appointments within the area of mechanical engineering design, salary commensurate with the applicant's background and experience. Preferred specializations include human centered design, design theory and methodology, creativity in engineering, bio-inspired design, design thinking, engineering education, and machine design. The projected start date is September 13, 2018. An earlier January 8, 2018 start date may be possible upon mutual agreement. Candidates with industry experience are encouraged to apply.

Academic Preparation: An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in mechanical engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent is required for appointment.

Professional Qualifications: Candidates are expected to demonstrate a potential for teaching excellence and scholarly activity with continued professional development in the general area of mechanical engineering design. An ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and administration from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds is essential.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills: Background in human centered design, design theory and methodology, creativity in engineering, bio-inspired design, design thinking, engineering education, or machine design; Knowledge of industry design practices; Interest in laboratory-based, hands-on instruction; Interest in promoting diversity; Willingness to teach in multiple areas of the undergraduate and graduate mechanical engineering curriculum.
