Director of Academic Support for Student Athletes

California University of Pennsylvania seeks to hire a full-time, permanent Director of Academic Support for Student Athletes to provide a comprehensive array of academic support services to student athletes and perform student - athlete compliance responsibilities. The position requires a flexible work schedule, including a minimum of three evenings each week during the academic year. Some weekend meetings also required.

Job Summary / Basic Function:

This position directs and performs complex professional academic support service functions to enable student-athletes to achieve progress toward their degree, and to ensure they are in compliance with the requirements of the Athletics department, the University, and the NCAA. The Director serves as the direct line of communication between student-athletes, faculty, coaches, administration, and various University departments concerning academic progress and issues. The Director also serves as the direct line of communication between various University departments to keep potential student-athletes, coaches, and administration apprised on the status of student applications for Athletics, University and NCAA compliance. The Director meets with potential student-athletes and their families and/or guardians to provide information on academic and institutional amenities and opportunities available to student-athletes. The Director maintains current student-athlete roster information for NCAA reporting to ensure student-athletes are maintaining eligibility standards. Maintains grades reports, academic achievements, classroom attendance, and other associated requirements and issues. The Director also serves as the supervisor of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. 

This position requires a flexible work schedule, including a minimum of three evenings each week during the academic year. Some evening and weekend meetings with potential student-athletes throughout the calendar year is required, as well as to assist with athletic operations.  

Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

- General knowledge of principles, practices and emerging trends involved in the provision of academic mentoring and support for student-athletes. 

- Excellent communication skills in the English language, both verbal and in writing. 

- Ability to mentor students individually and in small groups on complex student related matters and NCAA continuing eligibility requirements. 

- Demonstrated leadership skills. 

- Ability to maintain a professional and mature demeanor when communicating with individuals and groups with culturally diverse backgrounds. 

- Ability to evaluate existing operations and use initiative, creativity and resourcefulness in planning and implementing current and long-range program operations and improvements. 

- Knowledge in mentoring students hailing from entire spectrum of socioeconomic backgrounds, especially young adults from environments lacking in academic and character building nourishment. 

- Aptitude to train and supervise graduate students and delegate responsibilities effectively. 

- Ability to promptly identify a situation or problem area to rapidly design and engage in a corrective measure. 

- Skills to keep accurate and organized records of confidential student information. 

- Knowledge of standard office equipment and computer software including Microsoft Office applications.  

Minimum of Education / Training: Bachelor's degree required, masters preferred. A minimum of two years of experience in NCAA compliance at the Division I or II level, or two years of intercollegiate academic advising experience, is required.
