Job Description

Job Summary

This is a 3/4-time position that helps to improve business processes and supports critical business strategies by performing the development, implementation, and maintenance of business applications and learning technology systems. The Software Developer follows policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of the development of MTC learning technologies.

Essential Functions

* Software Development
* Assists Application Architects in needs analysis, creation of use cases; performs object and entity modeling
* Assists Application Architects in designing software architecture, interface, and specifications
* Create software and revise design according to Application Architects requests
* Continually release new and useful software
* Personally write or modify software code to solve high-priority software needs

* Assist Application Architects in Development Database Administration
* Follow policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of data
* Identify data sources, construct data decomposition diagrams, provide data flow diagrams and document the process as requested by Application Architects
* Implement data models and database designs established by Application Architects
* Monitor and resolve database performance issues, capacity issues, replication, and other distributed data issues as requested by Application Architects
* Monitor database resource usage and plan future storage requirements as requested by Application Architects
* Review business models and perform and impact analysis of data changes as requested by Application Architects
* Maintain and implement development and test database systems as requested by Application Architects
* Follow MTC and Church database standards

* Assist Application Architects in Providing expert consultation/direction to other MTC, BYU, COB and Missionary Department groups when requested
* Participate in MTC wide task forces (I.e., Implementation Team, Scheduling Task Force, Design Team, etc.) as requested by Application ArchitectsProvide consultation on the design, development, and implementation of business processes and procedures as requested by Application Architects
* Review, analyze, and evaluate business systems and user needs as requested by Application Architects

* Assist Application Architects in Guiding and advising MTC IT student employees
* Provide consultation for the design, development, and implementation of technical products and systems
* Provide consultation on complex projects
* Evaluate existing systems as requested by Application Architects
* Provide leadership in the development of the MTC system requirements


Minimum education/experience required:

* Bachelor's degree, preferably Computer Science, Information Management, Instructional Psychology and Technology, or a related technology or engineering field, OR the equivalent combination of education and related experience that includes web based programming, database design, client/server architecture, and advanced rich internet application design using HTML 5, JavaScript, Flash, Flex, or similar technology


* Bachelor's (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Information Management, Instructional Psychology and Technology, or a related technology or engineering field. Any applicant not holding a degree must present proven competency in software development, database administration, or systems design.
* 2 or more years of database administration experience
* 2 or more years of experience in distributed systems design and architecture, including J2EE and .Net.

* Ability to work in a team environment, good human relation skills, and attention to detail
* Self-direction; able to resolve most problems on his/her own
* Experience with conducting meetings and helping non-technical people to develop their own ideas
* A wide degree of creativity and latitude is
* Ability to provide consultation on complex projects, and is considered to be the top level contributor/specialist


* Fluency in a second language
* Experience with business process analysis and re-engineering and Agile SCRUM project management
* Understanding of web architecture, process messaging systems, and Angular.js design
* Understanding of training and instructional design skills in order to assist other departments at the MTC

Additional Comments

The incumbent must remain current on the many technical changes in the industry and at the MTC. The incumbent must be able to work under stress during times when there are machine or software failures and when clients may not be as tolerant of the inconvenience. This position must have a good knowledge of how to understand databases and connect between different systems. Currently, the MTC must connect to the current Church Travel system, BYU tables for Person Reference Object information, Church Units and Directories database, and the Missionary Department database.
