BRANDMAN UNIVERSITY:

Brandman University is a private, non-profit university and a member of the Chapman University System. The university serves 12,000 students annually in 57 undergraduate, graduate (including two doctoral programs), credential, and certificate programs through both online and blended modalities on 27 campuses in California and Washington (including six military bases). 37% of Brandman undergraduate students are from underrepresented groups; and 40% of undergraduates receive Pell grants. In addition, Brandman is a military friendly institution - 25% of Brandman students are active military, veterans or military dependents. RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Dean of the School of Education plays an essential role in carrying out the vision, mission and strategic plan of the institution. The Dean serves as the academic leader of the School of Education, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and innovation through program assessment and faculty development. The Dean is a visionary and an ambassador of the school to the rest of the institution and external bodies (local, state, and national level). The Dean has responsibility for planning, budgeting, scheduling, personnel matters, curriculum, instruction, and development and revision of academic programs. The Dean communicates effectively and works collaboratively with Brandman University administration, reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Dean is responsible for the recruitment and retention of faculty.

Specific responsibilities include:

Curriculum Oversight:

* Provide curricular leadership by initiating, sustaining, delivering or eliminating academic programs and school core curricula in accordance with strategic planning goals
* Develop new curriculum and review existing curriculum with faculty
* Supervise program and accreditation reviews
* Ensure academic excellence and integrity of the programs through continual assessment of academic unit, programs, and courses
* Assess the availability of appropriate electronic library resources to support programs
* Review and approve catalog copy for catalog
* Work with University units to identify program needs

Faculty and Staff Oversight:

* Develop long-range staffing plan to include new faculty hires, retirements and non-renewal of faculty contracts
* Ensure appropriate faculty support for academic programs
* Appoint search committee for new faculty hires and supervise the search process
* Render timely professional judgement on annual evaluations of faculty, reappointments and promotion, forwarding recommendation to Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs
* Review and approve faculty workload plans for academic year
* Work with the faculty, associate deans, administration to plan, supervise and coordinate faculty and staff development
* Conduct school-wide faculty meetings virtually once a month and twice annually face to face and provide oversight for faculty meetings and the discipline/program level
* Supervise and coordinate the activities of Associate Deans and support staff

Fiscal Management:

* Manage fiscal affairs of the School of Education
* Approve and disburse travel and professional development funds

Academic Administration:

* Lead school efforts toward the achievement of institutional goals
* Provide open communication at all times with faculty, staff and administration
* Disseminate appropriate information from the administration to school staff and faculty and from faculty to the administration
* Participate in Academic Affairs and Deans meetings called by the EVCAA
* Promote healthy class size averages by working with faculty, associate deans and administration to prepare class schedules that meet the needs of students in an effective, but efficient manner
* Representing the school with relevant professional associations and regulatory and accrediting agencies at the local, state and national levels

Academic Instruction & Other:

* Miscellaneous duties as assigned by EVCAA
* Work with the California Commission for Teacher Credentialing to ensure that the Brandman programs are in compliance with the state regulations
* Supervise the Brandman Credentialing Office
* Engage in the community and with school districts to promote new programs and partnerships with the School of Education
* May teach one class per academic year

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to social justice and an understanding of the transformational power of teaching and learning in fulfilling human potential, both for the School of Education's own students and for the students with whom the School's graduates will work. This individual will uphold the School of Education's high standards and strong commitment to student success.

The successful candidate will have highly developed skills in planning, organizing, and conducting complex analyses and interpreting related information. This individual will have demonstrated ability in leading a team and in addressing problems, defining relevant issues, drawing sound conclusions and making responsible policy or strategy recommendations. Political sensitivity and the ability to interact with diverse groups and individuals at all organizational levels is essential. The Dean will have excellent problem solving and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize a heavy workload under pressure and competing assignments. Honesty, dependability, trustworthiness, and a sense of humor are attributes that will be valued.

The Dean must have a demonstrated commitment to and experience advocating for the values of diversity. Candidates also must have a commitment to freedom of inquiry and professional ethics, with an understanding of how these values should inform professional education for teachers, counselors and educational administrators. The Dean will have demonstrated creativity and openness to innovation and experimentation in support of academic programs. The Dean will be an active listener with the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, administrators, and K-12 teachers and administrators.

CAREER TRACK LEADING TO THIS POSITION:

Candidates should have substantial experience in an academic environment, including exposure to and knowledge of academic issues including enrollment, student advisement, accreditation compliance and curriculum development. A minimum of five years effective academic administrative experience as a Department Chair, Program Director, Associate/Assistant Dean, or Dean, with demonstrated understanding of systems, administration, strategic planning, effective fiscal management, and personnel supervision is required. Experience with online course delivery is required and experience in a distributed campus environment is preferred. Candidates should have a demonstrated record of accomplishment and academic program development and oversight as well as in faculty hiring, development, and evaluation. Demonstrated effectiveness in working with school districts and accrediting agencies is important. Public speaking skills and strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential. Ideally, candidates will have experience with educational program review and accreditation, as well as experience in student recruitment, retention, marketing, and promotion. A commitment to working with adult students is required. Experience in California would be a plus.

EDUCATION:

Candidates should have an earned doctorate with higher education administrative and teaching experience.
