Job Description

About Us:

Braintree builds products that make payments easier-so easy that they fade into the background, making entirely new kinds of interactions possible. Interactions like seamlessly paying for your rideshare -- or the condo you rented this weekend -- without presenting a card or pressing a button, or buying a lamp on Pinterest...right from Pinterest. The Braintree full-stack payment platform lets companies build their own experiences and then scale their businesses around the globe. We're known for our technology but we're also known for our support, with internal risk and underwriting, account management and technical support teams who ensure a frictionless payments experience.

Acquired by PayPal in 2013, Braintree is now in an even greater position to change the way people pay. Headquartered in Chicago, Braintree has offices in San Francisco, New York, Sydney, London with employees stationed around the world.

Operations Data Internship

This 10 week internship will take place in our Chicago office. You will be a part of our Support team which acts as the front-line helping merchants navigate our products, integrate with our technology, and problem-solve a wide range of technical issues. Our Support team isn't your average call center team: they are highly motivated, technically proficient, and stakeholders in company initiatives -- we'd expect you to be as well. Day-to-day, you'll be helping the team by diving into untapped data, telling its story, and helping leaders utilize findings by making them digestible.

Responsibilities:

* Demonstrate and be a model for Braintree's Values of Ask Why, Care A Lot, and Solve Together

Ask Why

* Be a fresh set of eyes: Look at the data as an outsider and force us to think different
* Be comfortable giving and receiving feedback while in pursuit of a common goal
* Possess a fierce work ethic and curiosity in all things data-related (analysis, data science, modelling, automation, visualization, storytelling, etc.)
* Proactively seek out opportunities to research and advocate for ways to make our processes better

Care, A Lot

* Strong focus on data accessibility and creating tools and methods that enable system change
* Have a genuine interest in positively impacting individuals, teams, and merchants
* Complete your internship and leave a lasting impression

Solve Together

* Strong desire to collaborate with a cast of individuals and teams that could change daily
* Boldly insert yourself into the Braintree ecosystem to pair up with essential collaborators across the organization
* Ability to be productive almost immediately as you partner with knowledge experts

Requirements:

* Be someone who believes in Braintree's Values of Ask Why, Care, A Lot, and Solve Together
* Be a self-starter, self-learner, and possess incredible resourcefulness
* Ambitious, organized, and ready to work
* Course study related to information systems or data analysis
* Experience with Excel and SQL
* Have a keen interest in technology
* Have a strong desire to provide meaningful information in order to strengthen our business
* Undergraduate juniors or seniors OR students currently enrolled in a relevant Masters program

About Braintree

What we do

We help businesses process credit card payments by providing a merchant account, payment gateway, recurring billing and credit card storage. We work with companies primarily based in the U.S. but do have several large international customers. We're unlike others in the industry; we think and do things differently and are frequently told by our customers that we're a breath of fresh air.

History & Status

Braintree was founded in 2007, and we’ve grown faster than we ever thought possible. Our team is now over 30 strong and we frequently receive enthusiastic praise from our customers. We profitably bootstrapped the business for four years and then accepted a $34 million dollar investment from Accel in 2011. We are also a Level 1 PCI DSS provider. We are very fortunate to count among our customers some of the largest, most reputable, and fastest growing merchants in the U.S. We’ve worked unbelievably hard to deliver value and it’s paid off.

Team & Talent

Individual talent and teamwork is very important to us. Since starting, our most significant achievement has been getting the right people on our team. We’re getting better every day at improving our hiring practices, refining our core principles, and providing the right opportunities that drive enthusiasm. We believe that there are few things as rewarding as working with other highly talented people.

Culture

Culture is the totality of social behavior, beliefs, thoughts, work and organization. It’s not created from a company retreat. It doesn’t take shape from a vision statement. Culture is a living organism and is the summation of all inputs. No cultural foundation will be sustainable and have the critical force to withstand time and change unless it’s the preeminent objective and the prerequisite to all other actions. Success will only be achieved when culture becomes habitual, self-reinforced, self sustaining and frequently refreshed.

We believe that it’s not what we do that defines us, it’s how we do it. Principles drive behavior, and behavior creates culture. To that end, we’re still in the early stages of working on our culture. We have a lot to learn and we’re constantly trying to improve. This is our most recent version (Nov 2010).

The Braintree Compass
Be good, do good.
Help others succeed and celebrate their accomplishments.
Find reasons to be grateful and express it frequently.
Inspire others by being your best.
Be quick to empathize and slow to criticize.

The Braintree work ethos
Don’t be a monkey. Question everything; don't rely on assumptions.
Use Pareto to aim for the 80 and Parkinson to avoid time traps.
Swim in solutions, not problems.
There has got to be a better way, let’s figure it out.
Provide immediate, honest, and tactful feedback. Let nothing linger.

What we value in each other
Self management: both hands firmly gripped on the steering wheel.
Ownership: I’ve got it, you don’t need to think about it.
Initiative: getting things done without the slightest nudge.
Virtue: honesty, humility, thoughtfulness, kindness, and appreciation.
Problem solving: nothing that can’t be solved and improved.
Team work: we before I.
