Job Description

* This position is a stipended position and is only open to current employees in BPS whose current job status allows them to participate in these opportunities.*

The mission of Boston Public Schools Department of Adult Education and Community Services is to provide a variety of high quality educational services to BPS parents, children, employees and Boston residents in order to help them to develop and improve their educational status, political status, economic status and lives.

The Boston Public Schools' Department of Adult Education serves adult students who want to learn to speak English, improve his/her academic level and/or graduate from high school. The department employs eight full and 23 part-time staff to work with 400 students. The department operates a day and evening program. Online courses are also available for students wishing to utilize a more flexible independent learning modality.

We are looking for a staff member to join our energetic team; someone who is committed to working with our students, someone who understands the lives of urban adults and has a proven track record of working successfully with adult students who face academic and personal challenges. Adult Education provides students with engaging academic classes, electives, enrichment activities and individualized learning plans. Priority is given to parents of school-age children in order to empower them to become advocates for their families and to become more involved in their children's education.

Terms/Salary: Stipend position, BTU teacher rate. Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-9:30. Minimum: 192 hours annually. Boston Central Adult High School follows the BPS academic calendar.

* Teach two different 80-minute history classes on Tuesdays, and Thursday evenings.
* Contribute to ongoing curriculum development that prepares students to demonstrate mastery of historical thinking in performance-based assessments.
* Integrate technology in the classroom and support students in creating an online portfolio using the Adult Ed Online Portfolio Platform (training will be provided).
* Administer regular, ongoing in-class assessments.
* Support, monitor, collect and analyze data relative to student's academic performance goals.
* Make program's expectations clear to students at the beginning of each new semester.
* Possibly serve on Instructional Leadership Team (ILT).
* Collaborate with distance-learning teachers and other teachers in the Adult Diploma Pathway.
* Communicate classroom/student issues to Student Success Specialist and/or director in a timely matter.
* Perform other duties as requested by the Director.
* Communicate with Assessors.

Reports to: Director of Adult Education

Qualifications (Required)

* Knowledge of competency-based education.
* At least three (3) years teaching adults and curriculum development work.
* Understanding of the Common Core Curriculum and the MA DESE History Standards.
* Background in adult learner development (including teaching and/or training).
* Demonstrated leadership experience, good interpersonal skills that are necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators and agencies/stakeholders.
* Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills.
* Ability to use microsoft word, powerpoint, google, and the internet.
* Experience in working in a fast-paced, challenging environment.
* Valid MA teaching license in the appropriate field.
* Professional behaviors that include punctuality, organization, high expectations, respect and the ability to maintain a safe and culturally sensitive learning environment.
* SEI endorsement.

Qualification (Preferred) (one or more)

* Bilingual in Spanish, Cape Verdean or Haitian Creole a strong plus.
* Dual certification in Special Education and/or ESL.
* Prior work or volunteer experience with non-traditional students.
* Experience with any of the following: project-based learning, portfolio assessment, competency-based education, and cooperative group work, integration of technology and cross disciplinary learning, experiential learning, alternative assessments and integrating school to career experiences into the curriculum, a strong plus.
