Job Description

The Research Assistant (RA) will provide research, data analysis, and operational support for the health economics component of a large-scale, multi-site study to reduce opioid overdose deaths. Research focus will be on the economic evaluation including short- and long-term cost-effectiveness of the intervention. The research assistant will work closely with participating communities, intervention organizations, and study personnel and will be responsible for collecting economic data via on-site visits and telephone communications. The RA will travel to study sites to collect data by a structured interview format and conduct regular follow up interviews by phone and/or in person.

Responsibilities will span the research process and include literature review, collection, compilation, analysis, and interpretation of health services research data from various sites. The RA will be responsible for data collection, liaising with the data center to ensure successful transfer of economic data, conducting statistical and cost-effectiveness analyses, and supporting model parameterization when employing simulation modeling. The RA will be involved in manuscript preparation, presentation and dissemination of results, project documentation, and will assist with administrative tasks.

This position is part of a multidisciplinary team comprised of physicians, health services researchers, biostatisticians, public health professionals, and health economists. There is ample opportunity for development within this role, which is well-supported by senior research faculty. This position is ideal for a young investigator with interest and experience in public health, especially health economics, looking to make a substantial contribution to public health within a diverse research team.


* Conduct deep and thorough review of subject literature
* Coordinate, participate in, and ensure readiness for site visits. Conduct follow up as necessary.
* Coordinate, monitor, and collect healthcare utilization and cost data at and with study sites
* Analyze research data using basic and advanced statistical methodologies; interpret results for investigators and prepare reports
* Work closely with data center to ensure successful transfer of economic data
* Synthesize multiple forms of evidence to estimate parameters for simulation modeling
* Use an established computer simulation model to perform cost-effectiveness analyses
* Interpret model results to draw conclusions about intervention sustainability and cost-effectiveness
* Write and edit manuscripts at various stages of development
* Maintain project records and ensure adherence to established timelines
* Balance multiple competing priorities and tasks
* Prepare and coordinate applications to IRBs
* Submit and track progress of IRB approval and continued reporting
* Assist with project documentation, reporting, presentations, and preparation of manuscripts
* Maintain and update project and regulatory files, as necessary
* Administrative tasks


Tasks related to routine administration of research projects including meeting attendance, minutes and notes, scheduling, and logistics of travel.

Requires a bachelor's degree, preferably in economics, a health-related field or statistics, although outstanding applicants from other fields may be considered. Some demonstrated interest in healthcare or public health background should be apparent from educational record. Master's degree and/or specific training and experience with cost-effectiveness research preferred but not required.


1 -2 years of experience in a research role.

* Previous experience with microsimulation and model-based cost-effectiveness research desired- classroom experience acceptable

* A proven ability to learn and apply new technical skills
* Cultural sensitivity and ability to work well with individuals from diverse social, racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds
* Organizational ability to perform multiple tasks efficiently and to prioritize duties
* Must be able to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information
