Mechanical Customer Support Field Engineer

We are currently looking to recruit a Mechanical Customer Support Field Engineer for our main site in Derby, UK, to join us for our Rolling Stock Equipment (RoQ) division.


The RoQ organisation in Derby specialises in the design of bogies, bodyshell, TCMS, traction and braking systems, underframe equipment structural approval, service support, warranty support and electrical equipment. RoQ delivery is arranged aroud the formation of effective project teams, that comprise of Project Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Designers, Dynamics and Structures Specialists, CAD, RAMs Engineers and Offshore Engineering teams. Apart from this, the RoQ organisation also provides speciality support for our customers in the UK, through the Customer Support Field Engineering team.

The Mechanical Field Support Engineer applies electrical / mechanical theory and knowledge to investigate, test, analyze, repair, and modify vehicles and equipment. The Customer Support Field Engineer shall be able to use all known testing methods and instruments and produces accurate root cause investigations for our customer's issues. He/she creates and leads theoretical and practical training on equipment and systems.

Your Tasks

- You will investigate and diagnose the causes of mechanical malfunction or failure of operational equipment and recommend preventative and corrective maintenance, including associated documentation, and you will prepare specifications for materials, equipment components and processes.

- You will travel to the location of our customer, if the issue demands it, and perform an accurate root cause investigation of the same.

- You will instruct and direct technicians in servicing and repairing.

- You will plan, direct, and record periodic testing, and, depending on the need, you will recommend or initiate modification or replacement of equipment that fails to meet acceptable standards.

- You will support the modification process with wiring diagrams, layout drawings, and engineering specifications and methods for system or equipment modifications.

- You will advise management regarding customer satisfaction, product performance, and suggestions for product enhancements.

- Based on business needs, you will be required to perform other works as well.


- You will have a good understanding of mechanical engineering, preferably backed by education in the specific field (HND/HNC, apprenticeship or university degree).

- You will be able to work efficiently with customers, focusing on the relationship with them.

- An appreciation of railway engineering is seen as an advantage

- You are familiar with root cause analysis techniques and have a mind set on solving problems.

- You are open to demonstrate lessons learnt and analyze how they influence the day-to-day tasks.

- You are available to travel as required.

- You have a strong work ethic and are proficient in English.

This role requires a person who will demonstrate an aptitude for mechanical engineering, enjoys interacting with customers and is able to work under pressure.
