Description Summary

This position is responsible for supporting and guiding the formation of the strategic needs of the company through the application of analytics and programming to support the healthcare spend, reporting and program needs of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota's local, national and internal clients. This position requires the applicant to work independently and cross-functionally to initiate, plan, and lead analysis from conceptual development to conclusion. This position manages complex data and information utilizing industry knowledge, analytics and programming skills to produce and present meaningful and defensible results. In addition, a Principal level may lead project teams. The incumbent will lead efforts to define meaningful contributions that will influence strategic decision-making at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota.


  1. Responsible for analytic support for Blue Cross local, national and internal clients.

  2. Performs complex analysis of the data. Researches, analyzes data, applies statistical methods when appropriate, and provides interpretation of outcomes. Identifies issues to be researched, determining affected areas, estimating the impact and contributing to the resolution.

  3. Analyze data and report results on health care utilization, expenditures, outcomes, and benchmarks.

  4. Initiates action to discover new analysis or programming that will contribute to the: (1) continuous growth of the Data Insights department, and (2) ability of the department to play a more strategic role in meeting customer needs.

  5. Assists in the implementation of new products and systems by providing actionable information and recommendations that evaluate the impact of the proposed products and systems.

  6. Represents the division on corporate projects and may have leadership roles on these teams.

  7. Works closely with Data Insights Analysts to produce reports and analysis that support discussions in client meetings.

  8. Acts as a resource and/or mentor for other members of the department and company on business issues and may be responsible for training and guidance of other employees.



  • Bachelor's degree in related field and 7 years of relevant work experience, or 11 years or relevant work experience in lieu of a degree.

  • 5 years of experience analyzing and modeling data involving outcomes and utilization, using various software and computer programming languages (SAS, Visual Basic, DB2, Oracle, SSIS/SSRS, etc.)

  • Knowledge of managed care and healthcare claims.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft software applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access.

  • Demonstrated ability to design, evaluate and interpret complex data sets

  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks with competing priorities

  • Demonstrated analytic and problems solving skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interpret and communicate analytical information to both individuals and groups in a clear and concise manner

  • Demonstrated ability to present complex technical information to non-technical audiences and to senior decision-makers

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and in a team setting with individuals having diverse professional backgrounds including business, technical and/clinical

Preferred Requirements

  • Master's degree preferred

  • Knowledge of a Healthcare Analysis tool (MedeAnalytics, HDMS, Optum, etc.)
