About Bellingham Marine

Bellingham Marine has a long history starting in the Northwest U.S.A. Located on the Whatcom Creek Waterway in Bellingham, Washington, the company's origins date back to 1928 when it was incorporated under the name of Bellingham Builders Supply, Inc., and supplied ready-mix and other building materials to contractors and others. In 1954, Gaasland Construction purchased Bellingham Builders Supply and a few years later, in 1958, they obtained the manufacturing rights to the patented concrete Unifloat® product. The first UnifloatĀ® marina project built that same year was the Shilshole Marina in Seattle, a 1,500 slip double-berth moorage which still serves its owner well and became the standard by which West Coast marinas were measured. Since 1928, the company has remained at its present location, where its Corporate Headquarters and Northwest Division reside. In 1977, the Company established a manufacturing facility in California, which allowed expanded sales and production for the entire west coast, from Alaska to Mexico. In the early 1980's, the company focused solely on UnifloatĀ® production and marina construction and became known as Bellingham Marine. In January 1985, Bellingham Marine acquired Florida Floats, Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida, which formerly operated as a licensee for the UnifloatĀ® product in the Southeastern U.S. After 27 years of ownership and management, Peter Gaasland sold Bellingham Marine in January 1995 to a Canadian company headed by Mitch Taylor, a long-time Bellingham Marine customer. In 1996, the company bought back its license in Australia and in 1997 consolidated its position with the purchase of the assets of Pacific Marinas. A factory and head office were established in Brisbane along with sales and project management offices in Sydney and Melbourne. By 1999, Bellingham Marine Australia had grown to be the dominant marina builder in Australia. In 1998, Bellingham Marine purchased Concrete Floatation Systems, its Northeastern U.S.A. licensee. A fully staffed operating division and manufacturing facility was established in York, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. This new division completed Bellingham Marine's plan to provide its extensive services along the entire eastern coast of the United States plus Mexico, Canada and the Carribean. Also in 1998, Bellingham Marine expanded its business to New Zealand by purchasing the marina construction assets of its former licensee, Fletcher Construction. A factory and head office was established in Auckland and like their mates across the Tasman Sea, dominate New Zealand and Pacific Island markets. Bellingham Marine also supports licensees manufacturing its products in the Far East and Southern Europe. Nishida Tekko Corporation of Japan became a Bellingham Marine licensee in 1990 serving customers in Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea. Floating Docks Limited joined the Bellingham Marine family in 1997, introducing Bellingham Marine's product line to Greece and Egypt. As Bellingham Marine consolidates its position as the world leader in the marina manufacturing and construction industry, it continues to seek new opportunities to expand its product lines, services and global capabilities.
