Job Description

The Pharmacy Intern performs designated technical and clerical tasks associated with the preparation, labeling and dispensing of medications, including sterile admixtures and pre-packaged or unit dose drugs.

The Intern can expect to assume the following responsibilities:

* Performs designated tasks regarding pharmacy quality control, management of pharmacy records, inventory control and preparation of order for drugs.
* Assists in maintaining pharmacy drug stock by regularly checking for products that are outdated and/or low in inventory level; communicates immediately with the pharmacist when inventory levels are low.
* Enters medication orders from doctors' order sheets/prescriptions and fills according to label, ensuring that the correct product is dispensed and that the dosage form and charge quantity are in accordance with formulary; enters correct billing data.
* Assists with the essential functions related to drug purchasing and inventory control in an appropriate manner as needed.
* Labels medications appropriately for patient use.
* Performs delivery and stocking duties to ensure proper drug distribution.
* Delivers medication appropriately to patients, and makes deliveries daily.
* Compounds extemporaneous medications for dispensing, cart fill and sterile preparation.
* Determines the appropriate formula for drug to be compounded, and weights and measures needed amounts with 100% accuracy.
* Compounds or admixes ingredients appropriately under the supervision of the pharmacist.
* Packages medication in proper amount and containers, and labels appropriately with a label for the drug and the logbook.
* Performs IV admixtures, using aseptic techniques, to provide quality pharmacy service.
* Admixes small and large volume solutions, syringes and irrigation solutions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
* Prepares parenteral nutrition solutions and labels them appropriately.
* Processes orders for stock medication from units or clinic areas in order to ensure good pharmacy service is provided
* Fills hall or clinic stock requisitions with correct medications in a prompt manner. Loads and refills automated dispensing machine with medication as needed and in an appropriate manner.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to operate computers and compounding equipment and be Proficient in data entry; the candidate will also possess knowledge of basic drug terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, drug use and aseptic technique.
