Job Description

Responsible for the compilation, translation and dissemination of science/biomedical research based communications for a variety of publications and outlets including news releases, media advisories, social media and the BCM website.


* Writes news releases, media advisories, news briefs and newsletter copies related to basic science/biomedical research in AP style.
* Interprets complex information and ensures that communications are clear and accurate.
* Conducts interviews with BCM faculty, research staff and administration to identify science/biomedical research based story topics and assesses the potential for translation to the general public.
* Translates scientific findings into understandable concepts for the nonscientific community.
* Maintains relationships with faculty and staff and serves as a college resource regarding scientific publications and embargo dates.
* Collaborates with media team counterparts at other TMC institutions on science/biomedical related communication projects.
* Identifies and researches story topics.
* Interviews individuals for stories, such as BCM faculty, investigators, students, administration, and alumni.
* Writes stories in a variety of formats, including AP news style, consumer-oriented web, newsletter, and magazine.
* Reviews, submits for approval, and revises written material to meet the standards of the organization.


Education: Required: Bachelor degree in Communications, Journalism, English or a related field.

Preferred: Master degree in Biological Sciences, Medical Writing or equivalent interdisciplinary program.

Experience: Required: Three years of directly related experience.

Preferred: Experience in an academic or medical environment/media relations.
