Job Description

Position Description: 4th Year Pharmacy Intern

Department: Pharmacy

FLSA Status: Non-exempt Effective Date: January 2014

Primary Objective: Responsible for providing excellent customer service while serving the community's outpatient ambulatory health needs. Offer assistance in the Pharmacy by expeditiously filling the patient's prescriptions within the guidelines of federal, state, and local legal requirements.

Reports to: Pharmacy Manager

Major Responsibilities and Duties Which May Be Considered Essential:

Customer Service

* Greets the customer with a smile and a friendly greeting. This person builds customer confidence through patient understanding. Maintains a professional manner by answering the telephone quickly and with a positive attitude. Must remain calm and pleasant during busy times, and will handle customer complaints and problems in a positive manner to instill customer confidence and good will.

Responsibilities Related to Pharmacy Operations

* Accurately fills and refills prescriptions under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist. Takes new and refill verbal orders from ordering providers.
* Takes and receives RX transfers.
* Learns and becomes familiar with commonly used prescription drugs and OTC products, including new items. Demonstrates a familiarity with the item's location and availability.
* Complies with all 3rd party plans (knowledge of forms & information required).
* Provide patient counseling under direct supervision of Pharmacist.
* Help pharmacy complete and manage projects and programs (Rx dialer, Supplylogix, clinic outreach, synchronized refill etc.).
* Maintains and stocks automated dispensing units by following company standards of practice and pharmacist direction. (Pharmacy Ops)
* Properly orders product sizes and quantities and is careful in reordering slow moving items. Properly check in drug orders and put merchandise in its correct location. Insure that credits are given for returned items and order errors. Will prepare outdated drug items to be returned to vendors. (Pharmacy Ops)
* Utilize pharmacy computer software efficiently.
* Must maintain a clean, orderly and organized work area including the drug and "will call" area. (Pharmacy Ops)
* Communicates with the Pharmacists about current work problems. Demonstrate good judgment in problem solving. (Pharmacy Ops)
* Conduct pharmacy technician duties independently with minimal direction. Must work efficiently with a degree of speed. (Pharmacy Ops)
* Cashiers and delivers Rx and OTC items per company standards of practice, and accurately collect cash, checks, or charge payments from customers. Must properly record all paperwork pertinent to the Pharmacy. (Pharmacy Ops)
* Provide the basic pharmacy housecleaning, including removal of trash, dusting shelves, vacuuming and sweeping floors daily, periodically replacing or adding shelf tags, filling Rx supplies. (Pharmacy Ops)
* Other duties as assigned.

Quality Assurance

* Update patient profiles (medical conditions, allergies, phone numbers etc. (Quality Assurance)
* Contacts providers regarding RX problems and suggesting solutions or alternatives when necessary. (Quality Assurance)
* Comply with state and federal pharmacy laws and ensure compliance.
* Performs periodic pharmacy self-inspections. (Quality Assurance)

Education and Experience Requirements:

* Licensed by the State Board of Pharmacy through the State of Washington.
* Currently enrolled as a Pharmacy School student in good standing at an accredited School of Pharmacy.
* Knowledge of the Enterprise computer operation and how to handle emergencies.
* Proficient in typing and computer speed with accuracy.
* Demonstrate courteous and professional interpersonal communication skills.
* Ability to quickly and accurately perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percentages and dollars.
* Ability to read, write, speak, and understand conversational English.
* Complete the Fourth Year Intern Objectives in conjunction with the Pharmacy Manager/Preceptor.
* Must be available to work all shifts as scheduled. Regular attendance and punctuality is required.

Physical Requirements:

* Constant standing with frequent walks of a short distance.
* Occasionally lift up to 20 lbs. from floor to chest. Frequently lift 1-2 lbs. from floor to 7 feet.
* Frequently bend or stoop to stock below waist level shelves and to remove merchandise. Crouching, twisting, or pivoting at the waist and kneeling or squatting to low shelves is often required.
* Frequent repetitive hand movements and fine finger manipulation to operate cash register and the Pharmacy computer.
* Constant handling and grasping of merchandise, containers, and/or cartons.
