Based at Arkema's Corporate Offices and R&D Center in King of Prussia, PA, the Polymer Scientist is responsible for new product scientific research, technical new application research and technical service to support key North American markets for the Fluoropolymers business.


Technical and Scientific Research / Application Development
Develop new applications for existing products or invent new fluoropolymer products for key market applications within a gated product development process.  Develop fundamental scientific understanding of key material property and processing interactions by using systematic design of experiments and scientific models.  Provide technical application research (project scheduling, attendance at trials, trouble shooting, technical presentations, publications and reports) to achieve company objectives.  Develop new intellectual property based on findings.  Develop overall objectives, action plans and milestones with Technical Management, Business Development and Marketing/Sales personnel.


Technical Service
Provide timely proactive technical support to new and existing customers in key markets.  Co-develop presentations and publications with sales/business team to support business growth and goals.  Provide technical training to customers and Arkema personnel.  Must be able to handle multiple customer requests concurrently, identify root cause of customer issues, confirm them through internal or customer processing trials and then propose and implement corrective actions.  Must be able to master multiple diverse polymer processing technologies to support key customers and document in technical service reports.


Key activities include (but are not limited to):

  • Lead scientific research for new product development and technical application development for defined markets or applications.  This includes developing understanding of the impact of polymer structure on processing and end product performance. Identify new technical capabilities needed to pursue research and new equipment required.  Research and understand of the technical standards, technical literature and technical trends in the assigned markets.  Research and analyze competitive and complementary material technologies. Coordinate work closely with Business Development Engineers/Manager or Marketing and Sales.  Draft at least one research report per year on key project area. Develop technical presentations to support business development and sales activities as requested. 
  • Assume primary responsibility for technical service (TS) activities for defined markets including customer training, tooling and process recommendations, troubleshooting, and failure analysis. Technical service must be timely and utilize effort that is proportional to the defined opportunity.  Develop presentations as needed to support TS activities. Issue timely reports on TS trials with customers. 
  • Plan and execute processing studies in KOP labs, analyze data and draft reports for internal personnel and external customers to support technical service needs and defined research and development program needs. Process troubleshooting and/or failure analysis will involve defining the problem, developing and supporting experimentation or customer trials, and defining root cause and corrective actions.  Plan and execute customer processing and safety training. 
  • Identify new product/application ideas for Arkema through customer contacts and literature research.   Coordinate with business development/marketing to propose new products/application in new product ideas system. 
  • Participate in selected scientific conferences or trade shows to gain better understanding of new technologies and market trends.



  • Master's degree in Polymer Science, Material Science or related field with 5-7 years of industrial experience OR PhD with 2-5 years of industrial experience is required.
  • Understanding of polymer structure property relationships.
  • Experience in one or more polymer processing techniques and polymer rheology.
  • Hands on orientation to conduct experiments, maintain equipment is a must.
  • Knowledge of adsorbents technology is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate with and maintain good relations with internal and external customers.
  • Excellent written communication skills and proficiency in word, excel, powerpoint and statistical analysis.
  • Excellent organization skills, strong interpersonal skills and proven track record of working in teams.
  • Project leadership experience and ability to work independently.
