Job Description

Position schedule will be based on the school's standard schedule. While some districts may offer opportunities outside of the regular school schedule, these are not guaranteed and opportunities will be limited.

Please note that, due to state regulations, every substitute and regular employee must obtain a Background Search through Cogent ID, which requires a nonrefundable fee of $49.65 payable to 3M CogentID. In order to substitute as a teacher, you must also have either a teaching certificate, or a substitute license through the ALSDE, for which it costs $30.00 to apply. Instructions for both the background check and the substitute license will be made available to you following a successful interview.

In order to qualify to substitute for Special Education classrooms, employees must have a valid and current restraint training certificate. If you do not already possess a valid restraint training certificate, the certification will be provided to you for free.

A substitute teacher is responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Substitute teachers will work effectively with the school administration and other teachers to minimize any potential transition problems from the teacher to substitute and substitute to the teacher.

Substitute teachers must implement teacher lesson plans, assign student class work, and homework, maintain classroom control and discipline. Substitute teachers must also complete a daily report or evaluation to communicate any pertinent information resulting from the day's events.

Job Goals

* Reports to the school office at the beginning of school day to pick up required materials/schedule of classes.


* Reports to the school office at the end of school day to return any materials as needed.


* Follows sign out procedures as determined by the principal.


* Carries out a program of study set in lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.


* Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and involvement of the students.


* Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for each predetermined lesson.


* Employs instructional methods and materials that are deemed the most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives.


* Maintains a neat and orderly classroom. Straightens chairs, tables, clears chalkboard, etc.


* Takes attendance in accordance with school procedures.


* Indicates to students at the beginning of class the basic expectations for behavior in the class in accordance with school and district policies.


* Ensures that the students are never left unattended in the classroom.
