About Apex Learning

Apex Learning offers instructors the opportunity to teach in an innovative, online learning environment. Online Instructors work full- or part-time from home on a flexible daily schedule and are compensated based on their workload. This document is a summary of what you need to know about becoming an Apex Online Instructor. At the bottom of the document are instructions for applying. Our mission is to provide courses to students who would otherwise not have access to them, because their school does not have enough teachers or students to offer a particular course. Our courses do not compete with classroom instruction. Apex Learning courses are unique, not only because they are online, but also because they employ an innovative, outcomes-oriented approach to teaching and learning. An Apex Learning course is defined by a set of learning activities. Students complete the course by completing the required learning activities. We are not a school. Apex Learning provides a contracted educational service to public and private high schools. Apex Learning sends a recommended grade to the schools, but the schools record their own final grades and award credit for the work done in Apex Learning courses. Instructor time is education's most precious resource. Apex Learning therefore wants our Online Instructors to concentrate on those activities that are most valuable to students and rewarding to instructors. Apex Learning Online Instructors do not create their own courses. Instead, they use unique interactive curriculum materials specially developed by Apex Learning. Because they don't have to spend time planning lessons and creating assignments, Apex Learning Online Instructors can concentrate on supporting their online students by: Providing encouragement and answering questions about the material. Moderating online discussions. Evaluating assignments and providing feedback to students on their performance. Following up with students and their mentors who fall behind in the course to assure that they are not having special difficulties. Scoring quizzes and final exams. The amount of time it takes to accomplish these tasks varies according to the needs of individual students and the skill and experience of the supporting instructor. We help our instructors work efficiently by providing: Training for the online environment. Instructions and scoring rubrics for all assignments and assessments. Full-time staff for instructional support, customer support, and technical support. The preferred Apex Learning Online Instructor will be a certified high school teacher with at least two years experience teaching in the subject field. Online instructors must also: Be comfortable using computers for basic tasks like sending email and accessing the Internet. Complete an online exercise designed to help you decide if online teaching is right for you. Have a strong commitment to academic excellence and to our mission of bringing courses to students who would otherwise not have access to them. Have an Internet connection at home providing consistent, reliable connections. Have a computer at home that meets the minimum technical specifications. The selection process for Apex Learning Online Instructors is designed to give applicants and Apex Learning an opportunity to assess one another. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and pass the initial screening are interviewed by telephone. After the phone interview, those still being considered complete a few short tasks in a simulated course. This exercise is designed to illustrate the kinds of tasks online instructors perform and give the applicant a feel for the kinds of skills required for online learning and teaching. The results of this exercise are reviewed and final selections are made. Background and reference checks are then completed before offers are made to successful candidates. If you think you might like to be an Apex Learning Online Instructor, part-time or full-time, please send an email message to jobs@apexlearning.com. Attach a copy of your resume to the email message. The resume should be in Microsoft Word, .rtf, or Adobe Acrobat (pdf) format. Please be sure your resume lists all schools at which you have taught and the courses you taught at each. When we check references, we require at least the following: Name of the principal or other supervising administrator at the school where you were most recently employed. Names of both a student you have taught and a teacher with whom you have worked during the last three years. Your authorization for a background check.
