Process & Sustaining Engineer

Altek, a Custom Plastic Injection Molding Manufacturer in Liberty Lake, Washington has an immediate opening for a Process & Sustaining Engineer. The Process & Sustaining Engineer's primary responsibilities include; the injection molding tool qualification, and the development of a robust and standardized injection molding process, including secondary processes such as post mold
de-gating, machining, assembly, painting and printing. Other responsibilities include NPI input, sustaining engineering, quality and process improvement.

Entry Level requirements:

  • Ten years of relative experience within a manufacturing environment
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of basic and complex mold construction.
  • Practice and understanding of safe molding practices.
  • Understanding of Six-Sigma Practices: Control Charts, CpK, Design of Experiments, etc.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of equipment used in plastics manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of Over-Molding, Insert-Molding, Gas-Assist and Film-Insert-Molding.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload to meet established timelines
  • Familiarity and literacy in ERP systems

Technical Skills and Responsibilities

Tool Testing & Optimization:

  • Ensure that the injection molding tool is process capable and optimized.  Coordinate any necessary pilot phase tool and/or specification modifications with Program Manager and Director of Tooling. Utilize mechanical engineering and statistical methods when necessary to improve and validate the tool.
  • Review all Manufacturing Orders for MT and MM Tests to be performed and work with Production to execute part/mold and material tests either first hand or in coordination with Production Management.  
  • Work together with Scheduling and Production to plan testing dates in conjunction with the Production Schedules and Customer Demand with a goal of 24 to 48 hour response times for scheduling tests.  If a Mold arrives early work with Scheduling and Production to reschedule the Mold Test accordingly.
  • Work to review all mold test reports, tooling qualification protocols, initial process sheets and NPI forms forwarded from Production Staff testing activities.  Data is to be reviewed with assigned Program Managers to ensure all system requirements (ie. cycle times, shot weights, etc.) are accurate and updated prior to being released to production Via MP and MO creation.
  • Identify and document opportunities during testing activities for processes to improve part quality and establish needed production requirements.
  • Establish testing criteria and written feedback to Engineering, Production and the Tool Room for all molds being tested off shore or outside of Altek.
  • Respond to and document corrective action requests on time and ensure the proper follow up to identify the root cause and correct the issues.
  • When necessary, perform multi-factor DOEs to identify the process boundaries and to optimally center standard processing parameters for a highly robust process.
  • In cooperation with stakeholders agree on an optimized process using data collected above, and then document the processing parameters.

NPI & Sustaining Engineering:

  • Participates and assists in new product development (NPI) teams; evaluates overall process effectiveness (e.g. new material evaluations, etc.)
  • Responds to and documents corrective action requests on-time and ensures that the root cause has been identified and the problem corrected.
  • Monitor key jobs as identified by RMAs, Customer concerns, and Job Cost Variance discrepancies.
  • Validate, submit and follow-up on BOM changes as required.
  • Document improved processes (Process Cards, etc.) and provide ECN and SWI input to Program Manager and Quality.
  • Sustaining: Revisit the process when post-pilot production changes are necessary, either for quality, process improvement and/or in response to customer revision. Validate and approve any necessary modifications to the documented processing parameters proposed by Manufacturing and Program Manager.
  • Acquire Program Manager, Production and Customer approval of process re-validation when necessary.
  • Provide Technical assistance to Production.
