About Alexian Brothers Health System

Each year, Alexian Brothers Health System (ABHS) provides millions of dollars worth of charity care and community services touching thousands of lives, reflecting both its healing mission and the Values of the Alexian Brothers. ABHS facilities offer Alexian Assistance to many needy patients and residents, and absorb unreimbursed Medicare and Medicaid costs. Alexian Brothers institutions also provide a wide range of community services, including programs that benefit children, support the working poor and assist the elderly. ABHS meets general community needs through initiatives such as its parish nurse programs, while the Alexian Brothers continue their seven-century commitment to serving the marginalized through their mission in the Philippines and supportive housing programs for people living with AIDS and addictive disorders. Volunteers play a key role in perpetuating the Alexian Brothers' values and caring spirit, contributing thousands of hours each year to support the staffs of ABHS facilities and performing duties that otherwise might not be provided. Employees volunteer to serve on Alexian Spirit Committees, which provide support for a variety of charitable and community-service activities and develop initiatives to promote the Alexian spirit in the workplace. Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) students make an important contribution, augmenting the efforts of ABHS full-time and part-time chaplains. The Alexian Brothers require their ministries to provide charity care and community services. Each ABHS facility must prepare and submit to the ABHS's corporate office an annual "Charity Care and Community Services Report for Social Accountability" (Social Accountability Report), summarizing the facility's charitable and community services. The report identifies specific services, dollar assesents, a community assesent and other related information. The corporate office uses these reports and additional research to assemble this system-wide "Social Accountability Report," including an accounting of the value of charity care and community services provided by ABHS as a whole and by its individual facilities. The report then is submitted for review to the ABHS Board of Governors, as well as the Provincial Council of the Immaculate Conception (American) Province of the Alexian Brothers. The facilities' reports and this system-wide report help to demonstrate the ABHS contributions to the communities served by the Alexian Brothers. More importantly, these reports provide a quantifiable way to ensure that ABHS and its facilities are pursuing effectively the Alexian Brothers' long-standing mission to care for the sick and the disadvantaged of all socio-economic levels regardless of their ability to pay.
