Role Summary

The Tax Accountant is responsible for preparing federal and state income tax returns at Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.

Scope & Complexity

As an individual contributor, this role prepares federal and state income tax returns.

Key Duties

* Takes initiative to develop solutions and make recommendations on the detailed maintenance and preparation of direct taxes for the holding company and its subsidiaries. This may include:
* Preparing state quarterly FIN 18 and annual ASC 740 calculations.
* Maintaining the tax fixed assets system (BNA Fixed Assets), including report production.
* Maintaining the income tax software system (OneSource Express RS).
* Preparing VEBA tax return.
* Applies knowledge of tax laws through detailed research and analysis. Examples include:
* Analyzing changes to the state income tax laws to determine the impact to the company.
* Assisting subsidiary personnel with tax questions and problems.
* Assisting with appeals, audits and litigation.
* Keeping abreast of current tax laws, regulations and practices.
* With limited direction from manager:
* Ensures accounting practices are in compliance with company policies.
* Contributes to special tax projects, economic analysis and other projects.
* Provides tax and accounting support for Alaska Airlines Foundation.
* Participates in creating tax forecasts and projections, monthly journal entries, and account reconciliations.
* Contributes to the team by reviewing and preparing responses to tax controversies, ensuring timely responses are provided for information requests.

Job-Specific Skills, Experience & Education


* 2 years of direct tax experience, including public accounting experience.
* A Bachelor?s degree with a focus in accounting, or an additional 2 years of related experience in lieu of this degree.
* Experience in corporate tax return workpaper and form preparation.
* Detail oriented, self-motivated, organized and able to work efficiently and accurately under pressure to meet deadlines.
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel (including pivot tables and v-lookups) and PowerPoint.
* High school diploma or equivalent.
* Minimum age of 18.
* Must be authorized to work in the U.S.


* 1-2 years of state income tax return preparation and federal income tax and provision experience.
* A CPA, or progress toward a CPA.
