Job Summary

AECOM is seeking an Electrical Engineer to join AECOM's smart energy team in Chicago, Illinois. This team works on a variety of grid modernization, smart city, electrification, resilience, and sustainability related initiatives for municipal, utility, and private clients. Example topics covered by this team include smart electric mobility, smart street lighting, smart sensors & networks, microgrids, distributed generation, energy efficiency, district energy systems, net-zero buildings & communities, and coordinated infrastructure investments.

The Electrical Engineer will work closely with senior team members to successfully complete projects and add value to our clients. Primary tasks will include engineering, qualitative research, data analysis, presentation development, and client interfacing. Applicant will be expected to synthesis concepts into written and visual reports for both non-technical and technical audiences.

Success in this position requires a dynamic individual with high energy and motivation and an acute passion for developing smart energy solutions. Critical requirements include electrical engineering, teamwork skills, knowledge of the energy/infrastructure industries, and the ability to develop high quality and creative project deliverables in a fast-pace, evolving industry.

The successful candidate will need a strong and demonstrated interest in the topics covered by this team and to effectively communicate (written & oral) with peers and clients. This position will require an individual that is willing to perform a variety of tasks and work both independently and as part of a team.

Level specific responsibilities:

* Performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer.


* Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures.


* Works on detailed or routine engineering assignments involving calculations and relatively simple tests.


* Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered.


* Identifies discrepancies in results.


* Provides guidance to entry level engineers.


* Performs work in accordance with agreed upon budget and schedule with little supervision.



Minimum Requirements

* BA/BS in Engineering and 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.


* Quantitative analysis experience


* Strong presentation skills, including presentation material design (PowerPoint)


* Strong writing skills and ability to communicate complex processes or ideas simplistically.


* Strong communication skills (written and oral)


* Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint


* A general knowledge of the financial, technical, and political motivators that are driving smart energy infrastructure development, energy efficiency, and distributed energy resources

Preferred Qualifications

* Graduate degree in engineering, economics, policy, business or related field


* Previous work experience and/or background in energy, sustainability, resilience, smart city technology, climate, or project management


* Previous utility or municipal government work experience


* Proficiency in Microsoft Project


* Experience with social media platforms and experience with communication campaigns
