Pharmacy Intern - Pharmacy - Apopka - Per Diem

AdventHealth Apopka seeks to hire a Pharmacy Intern who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Facility Profile:

AdventHealth Apopka is a seven-story, 120-bed hospital offering an extensive range of services including expanded surgical services, advanced surgical suites and a catheterization lab. The hospital also features a 30,000-square-foot emergency department with pediatric-friendly beds, imaging services, a full-service cafeteria, chapel, gift shop and on-site fire station. The hospital opened in December 2017, replacing the 50-bed hospital that AdventHealth had operated in downtown Apopka for more than four decades.

1 weekend a month and variable weekdays; Variable

Job Summary:

Primary responsibility is the provision of medication distributive functions and pharmacy operational tasks, which includes but is not limited to assisting the pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medications, inventory management, and regulatory compliance. Advanced responsibilities include patient care interactions allowed according to Florida Pharmacy Intern licensure under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Performs duties necessary for the effective daily operation of all department services and programs. Accurately responds to medication dispensing requests, prepares medications (including compounding of sterile products) for pharmacist review/check, delivers checked medications to nursing units, and returns unused or expired medications to appropriate pharmacy areas. Accurately maintains operational functionality of and medication stock within automated dispensing cabinets (e.g. Pyxis Med Stations). The term of the internship is a maximum of six years. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:

* Knowledge of medical terminology
* Knowledge and competence in aseptic techniques
* Knowledge and competence in aseptic techniques and chemotherapy product preparation, including hazardous product handling (Preferred)
* Expertise in general hospital pharmacy operations (including medication dispensing and IV compounding) and hospital regulatory compliance (Preferred)
* Expertise with hospital computer systems, pharmacy technology, and pharmacy automation (Preferred)
* Expertise in USP 797 guidelines (Preferred)
* Expertise using Cerner pharmacy solutions and services (Preferred)
* Expertise using Pyxis automated dispensing technology (Preferred)
* Active enrollment in an intern program at a school or college of pharmacy
* Contemporary hospital pharmacy experience (Preferred)
* Practice experience in a large hospital (greater than 500 bed institution) and integrated healthcare system (three or more hospitals in system) (Preferred)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

* Current, valid State of Florida Pharmacist Intern license

Job Responsibilities:

* Develops and maintains the skills necessary to be functional as a pharmacy technician in all areas of the pharmacy. Actively performs all pharmacy technician functions and maintains active proficiency in operational programs, dispensing and compounding activities, hospital computer systems and medication systems, and established standard work parameters. Maintains operational proficiency in and provides periodic coverage of all operational areas including the central pharmacy, satellite pharmacy areas, and decentralized roles (as appropriate per campus).
* Consistently assists pharmacists in all pharmacy and patient care functions as needed. Accurately responds to medication dispensing requests, prepares medications for pharmacist review/check, delivers checked medications to nursing units in a timely manner, and returns unused or expired medications to appropriate pharmacy areas. Always obtains pharmacists' verification before distribution of any medication.
* Answers incoming telephone calls and responds to customer requests to ensure accurate and timely resolution of customer needs and representation of the department in a positive manner. Contacts patient care areas regarding unclear, expensive, short dated or problem medication orders. Works effectively with all members of the healthcare team to ensure the best outcome for the patient. Prioritizes activities to ensure the delivery of accurate, safe, timely, and appropriate medication availability based on patient needs.
* Performs all clerical and specialized technician duties related to front reception area and responds to external customer requests accurately and in a timely manner. Follows correct procedure for filling, recording and distributing pharmacy trays and interdepartmental product transfer requests.
* Adheres to policy and procedures concerning responsibilities/functions of the technician in keeping pharmacy areas stocked, clean, neat and well organized. Accurately manages medication inventories in pharmacy areas including central and satellite pharmacies and in patient care areas including nursing units and procedure areas. Maintains appropriate stock levels of medications and accurately turns medication inventory (first in, first out). Pre-packs oral solid/liquid medication into unit-dose packaging in accordance with procedures and guidelines. Accurately maintains operational functionality of automated dispensing cabinets (e.g. Pyxis Med Stations) by accurately restocking ADCs, conducting medication inventory reviews, and loading/unloading medications as directed.
* Prepares sterile products as required, using aseptic technique under the laminar flow hood or biological safety cabinet. Follows clean room guidelines and accurately compounds products such as injectable solutions, piggyback medication products, irrigation solutions, parenteral nutrition (TPN), prefilled syringes, reconstituted products, etc. Thoroughly cleans IV Room work area and equipment, including laminar flow hoods and compounding cabinets as directed. Wears appropriate attire, and completes regulatory paperwork and documentation as instructed.
* Assists pharmacists with regulatory compliance tasks including but not limited to USP 797 tasks, medication distribution tracking and record keeping, and drug crediting and expiration processing.
* Finds work to be done when assigned tasks are completed. Supports medication-use process improvements and carries out special projects or assignments as directed.
* Facilitates medication safety practices. Identifies, mitigates, and reports potential and actual medication errors. Uses effective negotiation skills to resolve conflicts. Is sensitive to the perspective of the patient, caregiver, or health care colleague in all communications.
* Assures continuity of pharmaceutical care between shifts and among staff. Works effectively with all members of the healthcare team to ensure the best outcome for the patient. Promotes cost-effective drug therapy and actively participates in stewardship and medication waste prevention programs.
* Handles, processes, and appropriately disposes of all waste materials, including all levels of hazardous waste, within the department. Appropriately uses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Chemo Spill Kits in the event of a cytotoxic spill.
* Provides orientation and training to new employees (pharmacy technicians, pharmacy interns, pharmacy residents, pharmacists, etc.) and experiential students (pharmacy technician students and doctor of pharmacy students). Helps motivate new employees by demonstrating good work ethics, positive attitude and by recognizing and acknowledging the accomplishments of the new employee.
* Participates in departmental meetings and departmental educational activities. Supports practice advancement initiatives, clinical projects, and stewardship initiatives led by colleagues and peers.
