Job Description

National Instruments has openings for talented, entry-level Digital Hardware Engineers. As an NI Digital Hardware Engineer (MS), you will enjoy challenging work and the unique opportunity to take ownership of your products and be involved in all aspects of the product development cycle, including design, prototyping, development, testing, and manufacturing production. You will perform complex design tasks, (analog, digital, and/or mixed signal), and ensure that the design meets its technical specifications and business goals. NI Digital Hardware Engineers may work in a variety of different project and product areas, including data and image acquisition, instrumentation, communications, RF instrumentation, and embedded circuits. The Digital Hardware Engineer II requires a MS degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering and requires that, as a result of the advanced degree, candidates be able to perform more complex design work, (digital, and/or mixed signal), demonstrate the ability to solve more complex design and technical problems, and work more independently. Keep in mind that there are many types of engineering roles at NI, as part of the digital position you will be considered for our FPGA/VHDL role as well - In this position, you will design and develop VHDL software to perform a variety of functions ranging from creating IP for the highly efficient exchange of data between an FPGA and host micro-processor, to DMA bus mastering, to the creation of customized VHDL-IP for basic scientific analysis and computation. The software you create will be targeted at highly specialized measurement and control devices such as data acquisition, motion, vision, and custom instrumentation that run embedded within a range of computing devices such as high-end desktop servers and tiny embedded and ruggedized computers. Core Job Responsibilities Become a leading technical expert on computer and electrical engineering technology, programmable logic design and circuit design Perform research as required to specify and develop your products Work and interact with a wide variety of NI staff in R&D hardware and software organizations, as well as employees from other business groups, including Applications Engineering, Manufacturing, and Product Marketing Diagnose and debug technical challenges with your product or problems arising when your product interacts or integrates with other NI products Develop software for testing the product and work with software engineers to implement system-level and other software integration for your product Implement and test digital and/or analog design using CAD and synthesis software tools Lead the efforts to develop documentation for the product Facilitate support required from Engineering Services (for drafting, layout, and mechanical design), Manufacturing, Marketing, and other departments to ensure successful development and timely release of your product Provide technical expertise and training as needed to Applications Engineers, Product Support Engineers, Technical Writers, customers, or other persons who use and/or support your product Review and approve product specifications and customer user documentation for the product

Position Requirements

M.S. in electrical engineering or computer engineering Minimum overall GPA: M.S.-3.5; Proficiency in synchronous design elements including flip-flops, timing diagrams, and state machines Thorough working knowledge of : Programmable logic design including VHDL or Verilog, synthesis, and design simulation techniques Computer architectures and interfaces Sequential and combinatorial logic Basic memory technologies and processor interfaces Analog design fundamentals Strong understanding of computers and programming languages (e.g. C, C++, LabVIEW, assembly language) Interest in learning about and working with digital, analog, and computer technologies Strong work ethic and drive to succeed Demonstrated ability to: Apply diagnostic insight to identify technical problems, propose viable options, and apply technical solutions. Quickly learn applicable technology, systems, and products Take initiative, be a self-starter, and work independently Work effectively in a team development environment Persistently drive tasks and projects to successful completion Take ownership of goals and schedules; manages time well Enjoy problem solving Grasp and actively engage in fast-paced technical conversations English Language Competency and effective communication skills Can clearly and effectively communicate in English, so that you can understand others and so that others can understand you clearly, particularly in technical conversations
