POSITION OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this position is to perform verification and validation of new instrumentation and software for flow cytometry.    

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/ MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform testing on new flow cytometry instrumentation and software:   instrument quality control and maintenance, software bug finding and reproduction, acquisition and interpretation of experimental data, sample preparation.
Completely and precisely record experimental/testing results. Maintain accurate laboratory notebook in accordance with relevant Life Technologies required standards (e.g. ISO compliance, GLP/GMP requirements, etc.)
Help to m aintain the daily operation of the flow cytometry facilities; perform routine tasks as assigned.
Advise supervisor of factors that may affect test protocols.  
  Practice good laboratory housekeeping, both of own area and common areas
Other tasks as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities.   Requires the ability to work under pressure with deadlines.
Ability to quickly master new skills, methods and tools.
Ability to follow written and verbal protocols, test plans, and instructions.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to express testing results in a clear, concise manner.
Skill in the use of computers and instrumentation in a laboratory setting; word processing, spreadsheet, and instrumentation software experience is preferred
Skill as a team player, and an ability to accept supervisory direction in a commercial establishment where the major goal is product development.
Ability to work with minimal supervision once testing/experimental design has been defined.
Basic knowledge in the field of computer science, cell biology, or immunology preferred

Education and Experience
Candidate should be currently enrolled in a Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. program at an accredited college or university.
Completed at least three years of undergraduate studies in the field of computer science or a biological science. Prior experience using flow cytometry instrumentation and software is preferred, but not required.

Expected Deliverables
Operate a flow cytometer with minimal supervision, once training has been completed.
Prepare experimental samples for flow cytometer testing.
Execute instrument/software testing plans with minimal supervision.
Prepare buffers and reagents used in flow cytometry testing.
Perform routine instrument maintenance with minimal supervision.
Perform testing as defined in verification and/or validation plans.

Outline:
The successful candidate will initially be trained in the operation of a flow cytometer, and in basic cell preparation methods. After initial training, the intern will perform basic instrument maintenance tasks. The intern will accept direction from the Group Leader or from a lead in verification/validation testing. Experimentation may include preparatory testing aimed at software testing, instrument validation, or helping to execute a defined verification/validation plan. The intern will also be expected to perform basic laboratory tasks such as making buffers, archiving data and test reports, and autoclaving waste.

Intern candidates must be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelors, Masters or PhD program.  Graduating students are eligible only if they are returning to school the following semester to pursue the next level degree.
