For the past five years, Google Summer of Code has connected students
with open-source projects like MySQL, Apache, GIMP, and many others.
It's an amazing opportunity for students to get first-hand experience
working on large-scale projects. Plus, students are paid to work on
open-source, and can work from anywhere they have an Internet
connection.
Mentoring projects have just been announced, and student applications
will be accepted March 23-April 3. The best way to have an
application accepted is to connect with mentoring organizations
directly--most of them have wiki pages with project ideas ready to
explore.
