AfterCollege is working as a lead technology partner with the White House to help young people find jobs.
AfterCollege has been selected by the White House to be a technology alpha partner in creating jobs and employment pathways for those age 16 to 24. This follows our partnership with United States CTO Aneesh Chopra in creating a Veteran’s Job Bank and is called Summer Jobs+.

Companies such as Starbucks, Jamba Juice & Wells Fargo along with government agencies such as the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service have committed to creating 250,000 job opportunities for the summer of 2012.
These include paid positions, mentoring relationships and job shadowing programs. Our service is completely free for students, alumni and universities. Employers pay to advertise their opportunities on AfterCollege. As part of the Summer Jobs + Bank we are offering employers the opportunity to post free internships to our Internship Channel and on the Summer Jobs+ Bank, which will be launching within the next 60 days.

“All of us at AfterCollege are honored and excited to be part of this important initiative” said Roberto Angulo, CEO of AfterCollege who was among the invited guests at the White House as President Obama unveiled the summer jobs resource.
As the nation continues to recover from the detrimental effects of the global financial crisis, there is a major focus on youth unemployment (age 16 – 24) in particular. According to the December 2011 report (PDF) from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the youth unemployment is more than double that of the rest of the working population at 17.45%.

Though youth can oftentimes be removed from the workforce during the school year, summer jobs are a very important step for young professionals trying to gain crucial work experience as they will provide them with necessary skills to compete and be successful in their future careers. According to an August 2011 report by the BLS about summer employment, “Unemployment among youth increased by 745,000 between April and July, more than last year’s increase of 571,000, but well below the levels seen in 2008 and 2009 (1.2 and 1.1 million, respectively).” The goal behind Summer Jobs+ and all of the partners involved it to ensure that this number decreases.
AfterCollege is inviting all employers to share their internships and encourages colleges to tell their students about this initiative.
Employers are welcome to start posting their internship opportunities free of charge now.
