Being the largest career network specializing in entry-level recruitment, we thought it would be fun to share our first working experiences. From de-tasseling corn to dressing up as Bugs Bunny, we all had to start somewhere!
Beth M. (Sales) My VERY first job? De-tasseling corn (INSERT SMILEY FACE HERE)
Breeze C. (Sales) First official job was selling shoes to old ladies with EE-width feet at Naturalizer.
Brian H. (Sales & Product Development) Chalking the lines of local soccer fields when I was 12 years old. Got paid $10/field, but had to wake up at 5am every Saturday and Sunday during season with my dad. I have to admit, I was not very good at my job. It’s a safe bet that the soccer fields in Fullerton had the most crooked lines in the state. I ended up using that money to invest in the stock market when I turned 16 - I bought like 20 shares of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream…of course.
Carol R. (Accounting) My first job actually was as a car hop at a drive-in restaurant. I only worked there one day-all the high school kids came there and spent all of their money on food only leaving pennies for tips. That was my first and last job in the food service business-and no, I did not wear roller skates!
Carrie M. (Client Services) Besides babysitting in the neighborhood, “I was Bugs Bunny in the mall at the opening of the Warner Brothers store.
Chad B. (“That Guy”) I worked at Disneyland at Carnation Plaza Gardens. If you’ve been there you know the place. It’s where the Big Bands played next to Cinderella’s castle. I served burgers, fries and scooped ice cream to thousands of guests over the course of the summer of my senior year in high school. The best part about the job (if there really could be one) was watching Tinkerbell slam into a queen size mattress backstage when she had to be stopped from flying through the air during the fireworks show. Oh, and of course my costume. I wore red polyester pants, a white short sleeve button up shirt, red suspenders, a red newsies cap and, of course, my Disneyland Cast Member Name Tag. This was the entrance to the location I worked at: http://jungleis101.blogspot.com/2008/08/disneyland-carnation-plaza-gardens.html
David R. (Web Design) My first real job was working at a Deli/Butcher shop.
Elisa B. (Business Development) Waitress at Edie’s Ice Cream Parlor in Palo Alto, CA.
Elizabeth R. (Client Services) I worked as a dancer at Coyote Ranch (http://www.coyoteranch.com/Coyote_Ranch/Home.html). NO, not anything dirty. It’s a family-oriented ranch that hosts kid’s parties and company picnics. We would dance along with a live country band and did various routines, including the can-can! We were called the Coyote Kickers.
Hilary W. (University Relations) Office assistant in an ophthalmology & optometry practice.
Jenny M. (Sales) Biotech laboratory internship (mostly running Western blots or “protein immunoblots”) for BAbCo (Berkeley Antibody Company, now a division of Covance – an AfterCollege sometimes client).
Melissa V. (Business Development) Concession stand girl at a bingo parlor.
Mike F. (University Relations) Ice cream scooper.
Michael D. (Sales, Partnerships and Business Development) Paperboy in Akron, Ohio but my first “real” job was digging ditches for in-ground sprinkler systems.
Nick F. (University Relations) Papa Murphy’s Pizza
Perry L. (Engineering) Press Designer
Roberto A. (CEO) First job was part-time office boy at the vice-provost office at Stanford, freshman year. I ran errands, did office work and helped with presentations to library donors. I took the job because I needed money to go to South America during that summer.
Roxie C. (Partnerships) Hostess at Carrabba’s
Saan S. (Engineering) My first job was a summer job working as a file clerk at Social Security Administration following the end of my freshman year in high school.
Steve G. (Engineering) Mechanic
Susan G. (Client Services) Fast food restaurant – McDonald’s
Valerie H. (Partnerships) My first job was as a camp counselor for the San Francisco Giants. They used to run a week long youth baseball camp out in the bay area at various locations over the summer. I taught little 7 year old kids how to throw, bat, slide, field, and other various fundamentals of baseball. And ran around in an old Giants uni all summer. It was awesome!
