Description


Serve as a Project Engineer in the Imaging Spectroscopy Department, Space Science Applications Laboratory, Physical Sciences Laboratory, Engineering and Technology Group. Provide direct on-site support and field support for the design, development, test, integration, and deployment activities of the Imaging Spectroscopy Department. Support will be for the suite of infrared sensors, including existing and future ground-based instruments, airborne instruments, and astronomical telescope facility instruments. Candidate will work with optical, mechanical, and electrical engineers as well as scientists and program managers to design, develop, and test optical components of imaging sensors. Design activities will include developing optical system requirements and test procedures, detailed analysis of the optical design, interactions with optics vendors, presentation of design concept and details at meetings and peer reviews. Development activities will include hardware inspection, cleaning, assembly, and alignment. Testing will include development and execution of tests and subsequent analysis necessary to verify that the design meets requirements and anomalies are resolved. Candidate will work with Aerospace and customer teams to integrate systems into facilities and onto airborne and ground-based platforms. Candidate will work with Aerospace and customer teams on test activities where systems are deployed at test locations. Travel is required.

 

Qualifications


A BS degree in science, mathematics, or engineering is required. Demonstrated experience in optics, detector technology, vacuum technology, and cryogenic systems is desired. Familiarity with mechanical engineering software, such as SolidWorks or Pro/Engineer is desired. Familiarity with optical design software, such as Zemax, CodeV, or Oslo is desired. Ability to work closely with interdisciplinary teams is required. Excellent communication skills are essential. The ability to obtain a SSBI clearance is required.
